What is MMA? --> It is a two-part reactive Methyl Methacrylate Adhesive (MMA). By itself, the MMA cures to a hard, brittle film. Therefore, most MMA adhesives are formulated with modifiers that improve flexibility and act as strengthening agents. These modifiers greatly improve the MMA adhesive’s overall tensile strength, as well as its resistance. They create strong bonds without adding extra weight or bulk.
Why MMAs vs. bolts? --> While this adhesive is STRONG, it must also have some give. MMA adhesives have good properties for shock mitigation. Bolting or screwing would place the fasteners in a very difficult low position on the hull where ensuring good secure mounting would be difficult.
Can it hold up? --> Yes! Our R&D team has done extensive testing for this adhesive to be cleared for Seakeeper Ride installations. Surface preparation is key. Surfaces must be wiped with a solvent, abraded (sanded), and wiped with a solvent again to remove contamination and provide a rough surface for bonding.
What are the downsides of MMAs? --> It's commonly confused with mixed martial arts. And that's not really relevant here...
