What should families know before Driver’s Education begins?

Driver’s Education is not designed to get students licensed as quickly as possible.

It is designed to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and habits needed to become safe drivers.

Throughout this week, we’ve talked about:

✔ Classroom instruction
✔ Practice hours
✔ Behind-the-Wheel lessons
✔ The importance of practicing between lessons

All of these pieces work together.

The students who tend to have the most success are the ones who understand that learning to drive is a process that takes time, practice, and patience.

Tomorrow, a new group of students will begin that journey.

DRIVER’S ED FAQ:
Why do students need to practice between driving lessons?

Because driving is a skill that develops over time.

Behind-the-Wheel lessons introduce new concepts, techniques, and driving strategies, but students need time to apply those skills in real-world situations.

Just like learning a sport, a musical instrument, or any other skill, improvement comes through repetition and practice.

Students who regularly practice between lessons have opportunities to:

✔ Build confidence behind the wheel
✔ Strengthen decision-making skills
✔ Improve vehicle control
✔ Apply what they learned during Driver’s Education

The students who make the most progress are often not the ones who drive the most—they’re the ones who intentionally practice the skills they’ve been taught.

Driver’s Education provides the foundation.

Practice helps build the driver.

DRIVER’S ED FAQ:
Why are driving lessons spaced apart?

One of the most common questions we receive is:

“Can my child complete all of their driving lessons right away?”

The short answer: No.

Driver Education is designed to be a process, not a race to completion.

Behind-the-Wheel lessons are intentionally spaced apart to give students time to practice what they have learned before moving on to the next lesson.

For example:

✔ Lesson 1 introduces foundational driving skills.
✔ Students should then practice those skills at home.
✔ Lesson 2 builds upon those skills and introduces new concepts.
✔ More practice follows before Lesson 3.

Each lesson is designed to build upon the previous one.

Students who take time to practice between lessons often gain more confidence, develop stronger driving habits, and perform better during their final evaluation.

The goal isn’t to finish Driver’s Ed as quickly as possible.

The goal is to develop safe, aware, and responsible drivers.

In observance of Juneteenth, Green Light Driving Academy will be closed on Friday, June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a time to reflect on freedom, progress, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

We encourage our students, families, and community members to take a moment to honor the significance of this day.

Our office will reopen during normal business hours on Monday, June 22..the first day of summer sessions! Any messages, emails, registrations, or inquiries received while we are closed will be returned as soon as possible.

We also encourage you to utilize our website www.greenlightda.com where the answers to most questions can be found.

DRIVER’S ED FAQ:
How many practice hours are required?

In Maryland, drivers under the age of 25 must complete:

✔ 60 hours of supervised driving practice
✔ Including 10 nighttime hours

Many families are surprised to learn that these practice hours are completed outside of Driver’s Education with a qualified supervising driver.

Starting early is important because it gives students time to understand the licensing process and begin building experience behind the wheel.

However, it’s also important to understand that Driver’s Education is designed to teach skills, strategies, and safety concepts that students should continue practicing throughout the program.

While some students arrive with significant driving experience, Driver’s Education often introduces concepts and techniques that may not have been covered during practice at home.

The goal isn’t simply to complete 60 hours.

The goal is to use those hours to reinforce what is being taught in the classroom and during Behind-the-Wheel lessons so students can become safe, confident, and responsible drivers.

For drivers under age 25, Maryland requires a learner’s permit to be held for at least 9 months before becoming eligible for a provisional license.

During that time, students should focus on building safe driving habits and completing their required practice hours.

Driver’s Ed is just one step in the licensing journey.

But that’s just the beginning.

Students must also complete supervised practice outside of Driver’s Ed before becoming eligible for a provisional license (this practice is not intended to be completed BEFORE driver’s education)

The more quality practice a student receives, the more confident they typically become behind the wheel.

One of the biggest challenges we face as a driving school isn’t teaching students how to drive—it’s helping families understand how Maryland’s Driver Education and the required Graduated Licensing System actually work.

Many parents are surprised to learn that:

🚗 Driver’s Ed does not automatically lead to a driver’s license.

🚗 Practice hours are intended to reinforce what students learn during Driver’s Ed and Behind-the-Wheel lessons.

🚗 Missing class means missing instruction—not just a quiz.

🚗 Driving lessons are intentionally spaced apart so students can practice between lessons.

🚗 Many students complete Driver’s Ed months before becoming eligible for a provisional license.
