I was contacted in regards to providing an Inspection and Fair Market Valuation on this 2017 F150. The truck was being offered for sale by the County Sheriff's office in an auction format.

Upon inspection I found body/paint damage, a stained and partially flooded interior, a cracked windshield, and the worst part, the engine had a bad "KNOCK" when idling.

Unfortunately, this truck required more money to fix than it would be worth in the end.

We luckily gave enough information to the potential bidder that he was able to make an informed decision on whether or not this was a suitable purchase for him.

So why would you spend money to have a 2-year-old, low mileage CPO (Certified Pre Owned) Vehicle inspected before you buy?? Because it is a -BUYER BEWARE world we live in, and spending less than 1% of the total purchase price having independent eyes on the job is good insurance on your purchase.

In the case of this 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo being sold by a dealership in South Florida, the buyer told me that he wasn't comfortable buying it sight unseen without having someone check it over for any issues. His main concern?? Water Damage! Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc on Southwest Florida and there were a LOT of cars flooded during this catastrophic event. When you are buying a car in the $200K range, you do your due diligence in the buying process!

Luckily this dealership was nothing but honest in their representation of the car. Everything checked out on this 4K mile Porsche and it presented in a LIKE NEW condition.

This 1971 Oldsmobile 442 W30 Convertible may have been one of the most overlooked cars at Mecum Kissimmee 2023. Why do I say that? This was 1 of only 110 produced, Numbers Matching, 1 of 10 born with Factory AC, and possibly one of the earliest W-30 Convertibles built that year.

I personally verified the numbers matching status and went top to bottom on this car verifying the condition and validity of the claims made. I appraised this car to have a Fair Market Value of $140,000, taking into consideration the rarity and condition. Unfortunately, it did not sell, the bidding stalled out at $120K. Why? Who knows... the bidding public can be an odd and erratic group at times... Don't believe me?!?!

This 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge was valued at $560,000 as per Hagerty price guides prior to the Mecum Kissimmee 2023 Auctions. It sold for a whopping $ 1.1 million!!! Yet another moment when I almost fall out of my chair at the hammer price!

Either way, the muscle car market is strong.

When I first walked up to this 2020 Dodge Durango, I thought to myself, "This doesn't LOOK to be a Total Loss"... but then I opened the door and continued the inspection throughout the SUV. My first impression upon approach was WRONG!!!

This Dodge was struck by lightning which destroyed the interior and the electrical system. With over $30k in written damages and a Prior to Loss value of $33K, this Durango was destined to be a parts donor.

Let's face the facts, Diminished Value Appraisal reports can be subjective and many times will vary from appraiser to appraiser.

But when the DV Appraisal report is based on facts and follows an accepted set of guidelines, it is hard to argue with facts. It is also hard to argue the fact that your vehicle will be worth LESS post-accident than it was pre-accident.

I have been lucky enough to own a majority of my "Dream Cars" in my life, Keeping them on the other hand has been my downfall. Today It is crazy to see the prices on some of these classic cars that I have once owned and sold to buy other cars...

Sometime in 2004, (If I remember correctly) I got a phone call from a friend who said there was a car I might be interested in and it was sitting in a guy's shop about 20 miles from me. He had painted the car and went through the motor/drivetrain and then lost interest. It basically needed to be put back together after paint, and the interior needed to be finished. It was a numbers matching, 1979 Pontiac Trans Am.

I paid $3,000 for the car and a couple of pickup loads of parts. I finished putting the car back together after its recent paint job, bought all new interior and put it in, and had new graphics installed and new wheels and tires installed. It was an awesome car. I should have never sold that one!!

I sold that car in 2006 for $9K, I made a bit of pocket change on it and felt pretty good about my sale.

I no longer feel good about that sale. If I had that car still today it would probably be worth somewhere around 4 times as much as I sold it for back then.

This 2022 Corvette has lived a short, rough life. With only 14K miles on the clock... It was part of a fleet of Exotic Rental Cars that met its maker under the unskilled hands of an apparent novice driver not prepared for the 500HP brutality of the C8 Vette.

The insurance company was trying to prepare a repair plan for this Vette virtually. Luckily the vehicle owner and the repair shop thought better of that idea and called CFL Auto Appraise in to provide an in-person inspection and a detailed damage estimate. Things did not turn out so well for the Corvette as this will more than likely become a donor car and be deemed a total loss.

For about 7 months now, I have been trying my hand at Social Media posting on a daily basis. The results have been good, and I have received a lot of good feedback from people regarding my posts. Recently, something has been brought to my attention that I decided I needed to address.

When I started posting daily, I had made a conscious effort NEVER to name insurance companies or adjusters/appraisers that I deal with by name negatively. Somewhere along the way I lost sight of my original focus and started naming Insurance companies out loud in 1 or 2 instances when talking about my recent interactions with them. I have since gone back and deleted those posts and/or changed the wording to reflect a generalized statement of only an insurance company and not the name of the company.

From here forward, my intention is to focus ONLY on the positive aspect of the claims and files I work on, such as: successfully negotiating a higher total loss or diminished value settlement. Focus on the positive interactions I have within the industry and focus on all the cool classic, exotic, and interesting cars I get to inspect and sometimes even test drive.

The moral of the story today is, we all live and learn, and we all grow every day. I am glad this was pointed out to me and set me back on the path I originally set out to travel. Maybe if we all treated each other within this industry more like friends and less like foes, we could change some of the negative connotations that seem to surround our industry.

So in the spirit of positivity, today's picture is of my small classic car collection that I will be forever grateful for. (The 1958 Edsel actually belongs to my wife, but since I change the oil and maintain it, I consider it part of my collection). 😜
