Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival

We applaud the great progress that has been made in slowing the spread of COVID19, but we are not out of the woods yet, so after consulting with frontline medical experts (which also happen to be in the family!) and in an effort to keep our overlanding community safe for many summer events to come, the organizers of the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival have decided to cancel MAOF 2020. We are well underway in the process of fully refunding all ticketholders, and will be announcing the date of our planned MAOF 2021 in the coming days.

It was with careful deliberation that we came to this decision, and we feel that other events such as MLO’s New England Trail Ride Series present a safer opportunity to gain knowledge of 4x4 driving and overlanding techniques while maintaining social distancing. We take this action now to give our community sufficient time to plan their summer events, and do our part to promote responsible outdoor activities to keep our community safe during this uncertain time. In keeping with that commitment, Main Line Overland is making a $2,500 donation to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a cause we have contributed to every summer through our MAOF Charity Raffle. According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, currently 1 in 4 Americans are skipping meals or relying on food donations for nutrition. The state of Pennsylvania has been hit hard by the pandemic and its economic fallout, and we invite you to join us in supporting the Central PA community’s recovery at the link in our profile.

We wish everyone health, safety, and (social distancing) adventures in this difficult time, and look forward to starlit evenings and hearing stories around the campfire at MAOF 2021!

Montana Overland & 4x4 Adventures

This is NOT acceptable. Actually, it is not this year or local, but they don't expect the same problem this year. Not on this stretch of road anyway. Why not another problem, you ask? That is because this Forest Service road is now closed every year until the roads are dry. When people tear up our forest we ALL lose. No, this road was not fully closed because of this, but it is now open for a much shorter time each year.

It is not just about not making a bypass. It is also about not making the road worse. Digging massive holes while bouncing off your rev limiter is not better just because you are ON the road. Damage is damage. I have pulled cable more than once just to ensure I was not tearing things up. "Things" being the road OR my rig. I know, I know, playing in the mud is fun...but part of what we call maturity is realizing that a few minutes of fun can have a lifetime effect in less than desirable ways. (hmmm...where have I heard that before? Never mind, I am sure it will come back to me...) Tread Lightly my friends.

Overland Expo

To all of our friends who enjoy the Overland Expo, some important news for the off-road community. This is a brave and difficult decision by the Expo due to our current world situation. We wish them best of success, and our support, for the 2021 season.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce all in-person Overland Expo events this year have been postponed until 2021 due to the novel coronavirus. We have researched and considered all the options to host an event that would adhere to the highest level of safety without compromising the event experience.

We hoped that the world would look different by late summer and early fall. However, we are still facing restrictions regarding mass gatherings in the counties in which these events are based.
Ultimately, we concluded that because the safety and health of our attendees, exhibitors, and staff is our top priority, the responsible choice is to refrain from hosting in-person events in 2020.

We will honor ticket, sponsorship and booth space refunds or rollovers into the 2021 series thru August 14, 2020. We appreciate your support and look forward to better days when we can gather again in 2021.

Rob Pickering, I4WDTA Certified Trainer, and long time great friend, has most generously donated a brand new HDT Solar Shade Fly to our association.

It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts…it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.

Yesterday we received a gift that brought me to tears.

Our dear friends John Marshall, I4WDTA Master Trainer, and Melissa Nerone, made us something very special!

For as long as I have known John, he has continually shown me a better way to live through his example of thoughtfulness, gentleness, kindness, constantly looking to help others, while always remaining humble, in spite of his very considerable accomplishments.

John’s commitment to the I4WDTA is self-evident.
Members of the I4WDTA, please join me in thanking John for creating our I4WDTA Coat of Arms.

Our Coat of Arms will be passed on for generations to come and be proudly displayed at all subsequent I4WDTA headquarters.

For now, the I4WDTA Coat of Arms has its home at the Cole Learning Center – another gift from John and Melissa.

John and Melissa – thank you both so much!

Knowledge is the key to these type of situations!

Remember that one time when the road collapsed under one of your friends vehicle and no one freaked but instead formulated a stuck assessment and executed it? Saving the driver and vehicle preventing a major accident? Taking a class or two with an I4WDTA instructor can provide you the tools to confidently execute a recovery like this. Knowledge is power! #i4wdta #threeamigosoffroad #americanadventurist #offroad #offroadeducation #offroadrecovery #throwbackthursday

This is a good reminder, as we are following these pandemic conditions by staying in place, to use the time to check, clean, lubricate, and test your recovery equipment for proper condition, as well as replace what you deem needed. That way when the "all clear" sounds, you are ready to go! Stay safe.

Happy Easter!

This continent has numerous back-country locations to explore by OHV that are remote and feature stunning beauty. But in this case it could have been a tragic story and something to remind anyone planning solitary travel. Planning is boring - it's much more fun to go out and just do it! Until you die. Chance favors the prepared mind!

The Oregon State Police assisted our #AgencyPartners from Lake County Sheriff’s Office in locating a missing Jeep with a dog reported inside.

On July 18, 2019, Lake County Sheriff Deputies and Warner Valley Ambulance responded to a nearly unconscious elderly man found with a dog in a very remote part of Lake County. After attempting to walk out after being stranded on July 14, 2019, the subject collapsed with one of his dogs faithfully by his side. A bicyclist, who luckily happened to be in the area, came across the man and called for help. The gentleman was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

On July 20, 2019, Deputies from Lake County SO contact OSP to help with the search of the Jeep and second dog. OSP utilized the southwest region Airplane and quickly located the vehicle in a narrow, road less canyon. Troopers responded on ATVs and located the Jeep and missing dog that was in need of medical attention, but was alive. The dog was taken to a local animal hospital for immediate care.

We are happy to report that the man and his two dogs were reunited and are back home resting after their harrowing ordeal.

Are you ready to rumble!???!
Made a reference sheet of Spotting Hand Signals. Feel free to copy it for non-corporate use.
When you take training with the I4WDTA and are driving an automatic you will be told (a few times) that to secure your rig you stop, shift to Neutral, engage the park brake, test the park brake, then shift to Park. If your Parking brake wasn't holding well then chock your wheels. This was from one day back in 2005 when I didn't bother doing that, and the parking pawl didn't engage.
I'm headed North. I will be helping to lead an expedition up to the Arctic Ocean on December 5th. I'll be leading a bunch of press and media journalists as part of a new vehicle launch. Does anyone have any last minute ice driving skills or pointers for this desert dweller. A few years ago I ran a winter driving program for Toyota. However, I think this adventure may push my winter driving skills to their limit.
And this is why we do what we do. This could have gone so horribly wrong. https://www.facebook.com/jeepworldmx/videos/255085348525465/
Wishing everyone a great and safe Thanksgiving!
Getting ready for this week's TFC
Hopefully we have better weather for our upcoming TFC in Moab; it has been raining in Michigan since I arrived yesterday.
