Behind every Switlik product, there is someone who sewed it by hand, checked it, and stood behind it. On National Women's Equality Day, we're recognizing the women on our Trenton production floor who've kept that standard for over 100 years, because the people who build safety equipment are just as much a part of the story as the equipment itself.

What does a watch have to do with aviation? More than you'd think. ✈️⌚

Alberto Santos-Dumont was flying airships over Paris at the turn of the century. Louis Cartier was a jeweler and a friend. In 1904, Santos-Dumont ran into a problem: timing a flight meant taking a hand off the controls to dig a pocket watch out of his jacket.

He mentioned it to Cartier. Cartier came back with something nobody was making yet: a flat, square-cased watch strapped to the wrist, readable at a glance, with both hands still on the machine.

Cartier put it into production in 1911 as the Santos. The wristwatch had stopped being jewelry and become flight equipment: the first piece of gear built around what a pilot actually needs in the air.

That's still the whole idea. Equipment designed by the people who understand the problem, for the people who have to solve it at altitude.

In 1934, officials rejected America’s first parachute training tower, calling it “only an amusement device.”

Ever heard of the Caterpillar Club? 🪂

Since 1922, airmen who escaped a doomed aircraft and survived thanks to a parachute could apply for membership. And there wasn’t just one club. Nearly every parachute manufacturer had its own.

During World War II, Switlik became one of the largest parachute manufacturers in the world, leading us to establish our own Caterpillar Club. We’ve been keeping records of lives saved by Switlik parachutes since 1943.

More than 80 years later, we’re still uncovering new stories from people whose lives were saved by Switlik gear.
