During #NationalAgWeek farmers often visit schools to read books on agriculture. But with students learning from home, farmers are still doing their part to share the story of agriculture by reading books on social media. Here is an example from Monroe County farmer Vickie Bryant. And if you are looking for more ag education resources please visit: https://bit.ly/2wFogSv

Today was Farm Bureau Legislative Drive In Day, in addition to our Food Check Out activities of presenting food baskets and a book commemorating Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Centennial to our senators and representatives.

We enjoyed discussing some Farm Bureau priority issues with Senator David Givens and Representative Bart Rowland this morning, and also ran into Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles in the hallway.

We really appreciate all they do for agriculture!

Attending from Monroe County was Scott Davis, Roger and Linda Gillenwater, and Terry and Vickie Bryant.

To celebrate the fact that in the United States we have the most affordable food in the world, as well as having the safest, most abundant food supply, we are having a contest.

Come by the Farm Bureau office, make a guess as to the cost of the grocery items in the plastic tub, and if you are closest to the actual amount, you win the groceries!!

The picture below shows Linda Gillenwater, Monroe County Farm Bureau Womens Chair, and Vickie Bryant, AFBF Womens Committee member, holding a poster with the dates of Food Check Out, the week by which most consumers have earned enough disposable income - that portion of income available for spending or saving - to pay for their food for an entire year. Only five weeks!

Compare that to how long most individuals must work to pay their federal taxes, which is about 100 days!

One of the most important things Kentucky Farm Bureau does is establish legislative priorities for the coming year. Farm Bureau priority issues are the result of a policy development process that begins in each county and concludes at the state and national levels. We take this responsibility seriously and will do all we can to make sure the concerns of our farm families are heard. #StrongerTogether

Our 4th year to have all the county’s 3rd graders out to the Lyons Farm for Kids Day on the Farm. It was a fun and very educational day for the students, as they learned more about where they food comes from and what farmers do on a day to day basis.
The idea for doing this originated from when Mrs. Loretta Lyons taught school and would bring her classroom of students out to her farm each year.
Thank you to all the presenters and everyone who made this day possible!

February 3-9 has been recognized as Food Check-Out Week, the time of year when most consumers will have earned enough disposable income (that portion of income available for spending or saving) to pay for an entire years food supply.
In honor of this, and to recognize the importance of agriculture in Monroe County and the fact that in America we have the most affordable and safest food supply in the world, the Monroe County Farm Bureau Federation made a donation to the local backpack program.
In comparison to working 5 weeks to pay for a years worth of food, most Americans will have to work 100 days to pay their federal taxes.
Shown below are Karen Bartley and Linda Gillenwater presenting a check sponsoring two students to Cassie Strong. Also shown in the picture is Carolyn Emmett, Austyn Belcher, and Marika Hamilton.
