This time of year can test you.

We are deep into the racing season. The days are hot and humid, the weekends are packed, and the normal responsibilities of life don’t slow down just because we’re racing every weekend.

Work still needs done. The house still needs taken care of. The grass still grows. The bills still show up… And then there are race cars.

Cars get wrecked. Things break. You spend hours in the garage fixing something just to come home Sunday night with another list of things that need fixed before the next race.

When it happens once, you fix it and move on. When it keeps happening, the frustration builds and the bank account… that poor bank account.

By this point in the season, we’re tired.
Tired of the nonstop work. Late nights in the garage. Loading and unloading. Sweating through hot race days.

Sometimes even something we love can start to feel like work. That’s when we have to remind ourselves why we’re doing this.

We’re not just trying to build faster race cars. We’re trying to build better race car drivers and, more importantly, better humans.

Our kids are watching how we handle the bad luck just as much as they’re watching how we celebrate the wins. They see how we react when the car gets torn up. They hear what we say when things don’t go our way. They watch how we handle anger, disappointment, pressure and frustration on and off the track.

We tell them to control their emotions. Learn from mistakes. A bad race is just one race. Winning isn’t everything.

Sometimes we need those reminders just as much as they do.

Someday there won’t be a car waiting to be fixed. There won’t be another trailer to load Friday night. There won’t be another Saturday spent sweating at the racetrack watching our kids chase checkered flags.

And we’ll probably miss the chaos more than we realize.

So take the racing seriously. But don’t let the frustration steal the fun from something we’re incredibly fortunate to be doing together.

Because at the end of the day, the most important thing we are building at the racetrack isn’t sitting on four tires.

It’s sitting behind the wheel.
