ACCOMAC, Tuesday, Feb. 15 — Former county supervisors Ken Tucker and Reneta Major, former Accomack County Planning Commissioner Herb Thom and government watchdog Wesley Edwards have indicated interest in the vacant District 9 seat on the Accomack County Board of Supervisors, officials and sources say.

ONANCOCK, Tuesday, Feb. 15 — An Accomack County man has been arrested in connection with a jewelry heist from a residence and burglaries from two businesses, including the Corner Bakery.

Brandon Gregory Durrua, 22, of Onancock, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering and two counts of grand larceny, said Major Todd Godwin of the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office.

ACCOMAC, Monday, Feb. 14 — Accomack County’s operating budget for Fiscal Year 2012 will have its first airing Wednesday when County Administrator Steve Miner presents his recommended budget to the Accomack County Board of Supervisors.

The proposed budget does not include a tax increase or pay raises for county employees.

ACCOMAC, Friday, Feb. 11 — Thieves are providing their mettle as they meddle with metal.

Now the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office wants the public’s help in stopping them.

This time the victims are three cellular towers, said Sheriff’s Office Major Todd Godwin, that now are apparently missing parts.

ACCOMAC, Friday, Feb. 11 — The Eastern Shore of Virginia’s Hispanic population grew significantly in the last decade, according to recently released data from the 2010 U.S. Census.

Accomack has 2,850 Hispanic residents, an increase of over 38 percent from 2000. Northampton County has 874 Hispanic residents, a 92.5 percent increase over the number counted in 2000.

EXMORE, Wednesday, Feb. 9 — Lauren Underhill had a bad feeling Jan. 22 when she returned from a lunch break to her job at The Computer Store on Lankford Highway.

A police officer who had seen the accident had his lights on and was parked on the shoulder of the highway.

Underhill’s Labrador retriever, Claire, was lying injured beside a ditch.

ACCOMAC, Wednesday, Feb. 9 — An Accomack County Sheriff’s Office investigator resigned after being charged with 10 counts of stealing energy drinks from a Chincoteague Island convenience store.

Jerry Spencer Tarr, 45, of Chincoteague, was arrested and released Monday after a State Police investigation.

He resigned from his position the same day, said Sheriff Larry Giddens.

PARKSLEY: Firefighters put quick stop on doublewide fire Tuesday | delmarvanow.com | The Daily Times

PARKSLEY, Tuesday, Feb. 8 — Units and personnel from four local companies responded to a structure fire Tuesday near the site of a fatal fire that happened last month.

Two families lived at the home at 19244 Country Court that was reported on fire around noon. They said nobody was injured.

People who were in the house at the time of the blaze said an open outside fire was the cause.

ACCOMAC, Tuesday, Feb. 8 — Accomack County Supervisor E. Philip McCaleb, a Belle Haven businessman who won the District 9 seat on the Board of Supervisors in 2007, will resign effective Friday.

McCaleb cited “health reasons” in his Tuesday resignation letter to Board Chairman Donald Hart Jr.

ACCOMAC — Both Eastern Shore of Virginia counties declined in population over the last decade, according to figures the United States Census Bureau released Thursday.

Accomack County lost 13.42 percent of its population in the last decade, mainly in the northern part of the county including Chincoteague, while Northampton County lost 5.38 percent.
