With this Summer weather.... it's super important to know when it's a good time to ride and when it's a good time to take the day off. Add the temperature + humidity % ... the total number, check this chart and see whether it's good to work your horse.

When it's super humid, even cooling them down with water won't help... b/c the horse cannot adequately evaporate the water.... making his own body a hot box. Please be smart...

Amazing!!!!

What if your horse could run up to you and say, “I’m cold, may I have my blanket?”

That’s exactly what a group of researchers at Norwegian University of Life Sciences and their team of 23 steeds have accomplished in two separate stables in Norway. Anyone who has ever had a relationship with a horse knows how intelligent they are, and that they often understand what the human wants – but now we may have an entry into better understanding what it is a horse may desire.

The team trained the horses for 10 to 15 minutes a day to learn the meaning of three symbols. After just 11 days, all 23 horses were able to recognise the meanings: Blanket on, blanket off, or no change. What’s beautiful is that not only were they so easily able to learn the symbols and then they put that knowledge to work, but the whole thought process involved. “I’m hot, I want this blanket off, I’ll nudge the “blanket off” symbol to have my blanket removed" – which is what participating horse Poltergeist is indicating in the photo.

Results show that choices made, i.e. the symbol touched, was not random but dependent on weather. Horses chose to stay without a blanket in nice weather, and they chose to have a blanket on when the weather was wet, windy and cold. This indicates that horses both had an understanding of the consequence of their choice on own thermal comfort, and that they successfully had learned to communicate their preference by using the symbols.

What may be the most heartening aspect of all, however, is that once the horses understood they could express themselves, they seem to have loved it! "When horses realised that they were able to communicate with the trainers, i.e. to signal their wishes regarding blanketing, many became very eager in the training or testing situation," the researchers write. "Some even tried to attract the attention of the trainers prior to the test situation, by vocalising and running towards the trainers, and follow their movements."

The Anatomy of Movement - Equine Wellness Magazine

Understanding how they move ...and how you either help or hinder is so vital!! We, as riders, need to be so very conscious of our position. Are you balanced? Is your horse balanced?

Movement is what horses are all about. In fact, they evolved from the fox terrier- sized Eohippus of 55 million years ago mostly because of their ability to move. Movement is still essential to every horse’s nature and even his life. A horse that cannot move is a horse in trouble. The Anatomy of G...

Always wonder why your horse spooks? Check out how they see to better understand how to approach objects etc

An insight into why horses may spook kindly done by Horses and road safety awareness, please check out their page.

Have any non-horsey people ever wondered why horses 'spook'? Spook meaning jump to the side, run forwards, back up, rear, kick out/buck or even bolt... around cyclists its because they can't hear you or see you until you have almost reached their shoulder, see diagram. The silent cyclist will often take the rider by surprise too! The same applies to lovely walkers ahead who kindly step back out of sight to allow a horse and rider to pass, the horse can't see you but it can hear you so now you have become a hedge monster which they will not want to pass. So cyclists, please call out 'bike behind' then slow down and pass widely and walkers, make yourself seen and talk to us, we won't bite honestly and once we get near you then step back so we can quietly walk past. If you are a dog walker, be kind to your dog and our horses, recall your dog and pop it back on a lead just while we get past each other, your dog might be ok with horses but our horses might not be ok with your dog. We are happy to share our bridleways with other vulnerable users but please look out for horses and be aware of how to pass safely, thank you for reading.

Very interesting read about how the bit affects the movement of the hind. Are you too tight on the bit? Amazing how things are so connected

How bit pressure affects the movement of the hindlimb!!!

The horses tongue attaches to the Hyoid bone (see photos)
The hyoid is Intimately connected to the airways and therefore affects the horses breathing, and is connected to hind limb via fascial. See below

Sternohyoideus connects the hyoid to the sternum
Omohyoideus connects the hyoid to the inside of the shoulder -Direct connection from the tongue to the sternum and shoulder along the bottom of the horse’s neck.

Tension in the tongue – tension in sternum horse can’t lift through back to allow for collection- affects hindquarters

Small muscles also connect the hyoid bones to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the poll. The TMJ is an important center for nerves that control the horse’s balance and proprioception. And the poll—its ability to bend and flex—is of central concern to the dressage rider. Because of the small muscles connecting them, there is a very close relationship (which few riders know about) between the horse’s tongue, hyoid bones, TMJ, poll, head, and neck.

“When the horse’s tongue is free and soft, all of this translates into a horse who is better able to move well, with coordination, improved balance, and a significantly lengthened stride.(L.Tellington- Jones 2013)”

When your body hurts.. what do you do? You can take Advil or Alleve, soak in a hot bath, or get a massage. Horses don't have a voice. We can only tell they are feeling off .. b/c they feel off when we ride them. Whether they have bad behavior or just not moving properly. We are their voice. Using massage helps a horse like massage helps a human. Doesn't our equine partners deserve the same treatment we give to ourselves??? :)

Pet World

People say that animals have no feelings. Just regular instincts. Get food, have sex, make off spring, kill intruders... etc. This video had me with tears. Animals do have emotions. They are more than "just an animal". Tapping into this helps you as a human understand and communicate better with your pet.

Cat father helps the mother to have her children

She literally comes to me in the pasture and follows my to the barn to be tacked up and ridden. I think she likes the conversation we have together.

12/10/2017

Horseback riding is a conversation between you and your horse. The way you use your body, communicates to your horse what you want to do. Your horse will become more eager to be with you because you offer a "puzzle" for them. They will enjoy the time you spend with them because it isn't routine or boring. You'll be less harsh on the bit and get a willing response from your horse.

12/10/2017

I have finally learned what it takes to have a great relationship with your horse... it’s a conversation between horse and rider.
