Abscesses. It's a nightmare, for the horse and for the owner. The horse turns three legged and the pain is horrible. Generally speaking, when you ask a vet or someone who has experienced an abscess on their horse, it takes 3 weeks on average for the abscess to blow. The length of time varies. Sometimes from being three legged for so long, the other leg abscesses once the other abscess blows.

Skye, my sweet TB, got an abscess from a stone bruise. She had recently been shod and must have nailed a stone pretty hard. Needless to say, she was lame. Broke my heart to see her in so much pain. What did I do?

I used the BEMER blanket and cuff everyday. 15 min setting on both. Everyday I went to treat my other horse's eye, I put the blanket on Skye and the cuff on her fetlock. Her abscess blew a week later through the nail hole of her shoe. ONE WEEK!!! BEMER works with the circulation to allow the body to do what it need to do, to fight infection. One of the great things BEMER does!!!

For those people who still insist in tying their horses mouth shut!!!

The Temperomandibular joint (TMJ) is “The joint with the most proprioceptive nerves in the horse’s entire body".

When the horse’s lower jaw cannot move, it cannot, therefore, ‘transmit’ accurate positioning data to the horse’s body, which results in poor movement and performance.

TMJ dysfunction reaction in horses are as follows:
Balance may be impaired
Ability to perform lateral movements will be impaired
Range of motion of the cervical vertebrae will be impacted
Contraction of the long hyoid muscles can put other muscles into spasm and tension
The horse wants to ‘go behind the bit’ to relieve tension in the muscles between the hyoid and the scapula and/or the sternum
It sets the stage for a hollow back
It shortens the horse’s stride

STILL Want ot tie the horses mouth shut?

BEMER works with the circulation. It helps open up the circulation to flow more fluidly. It aids the body in doing what it does best.... repair, recover and rebuild. Allows the medicine to get to where it needs to go!

I've been putting the BEMER cuff on Merlin's eye area... (obviously not ON the eye) everyday since his surgery. Below is a picture of post surgery and the day after. You can tell, it's much much better than expected. There is still swelling in the lids but it’s resolving and healing great!

10/11/2019

Merlin's surgery to remove cancer cells on his eye ball went well!!! His lids are swollen but it's amazing how the body protects itself!!!! Meds are twice a day but.... you know what this boy got.... yup.... BEMER!!! It will allow his circulation to open and get that medicine where it needs to go AND allow his body to heal. Such fantastic technology.

Worked on Doc, a pasture mate with Derby (Secretariats grandson) in Great Falls on Saturday. Doc is recovering from a torn ligament in his front right and really enjoyed his massage. He's an older TB and has trouble gaining weight. Amazing how recent lameness can affect his muscles so much. Lots of licking and chewing!! Doc is another happy massage client!!

With this Summer weather.... it's super important to know when it's a good time to ride and when it's a good time to take the day off. Add the temperature + humidity % ... the total number, check this chart and see whether it's good to work your horse.

When it's super humid, even cooling them down with water won't help... b/c the horse cannot adequately evaporate the water.... making his own body a hot box. Please be smart...

Amazing!!!!

Amazing!!!!

What if your horse could run up to you and say, “I’m cold, may I have my blanket?”

That’s exactly what a group of researchers at Norwegian University of Life Sciences and their team of 23 steeds have accomplished in two separate stables in Norway. Anyone who has ever had a relationship with a horse knows how intelligent they are, and that they often understand what the human wants – but now we may have an entry into better understanding what it is a horse may desire.

The team trained the horses for 10 to 15 minutes a day to learn the meaning of three symbols. After just 11 days, all 23 horses were able to recognise the meanings: Blanket on, blanket off, or no change. What’s beautiful is that not only were they so easily able to learn the symbols and then they put that knowledge to work, but the whole thought process involved. “I’m hot, I want this blanket off, I’ll nudge the “blanket off” symbol to have my blanket removed" – which is what participating horse Poltergeist is indicating in the photo.

Results show that choices made, i.e. the symbol touched, was not random but dependent on weather. Horses chose to stay without a blanket in nice weather, and they chose to have a blanket on when the weather was wet, windy and cold. This indicates that horses both had an understanding of the consequence of their choice on own thermal comfort, and that they successfully had learned to communicate their preference by using the symbols.

What may be the most heartening aspect of all, however, is that once the horses understood they could express themselves, they seem to have loved it! "When horses realised that they were able to communicate with the trainers, i.e. to signal their wishes regarding blanketing, many became very eager in the training or testing situation," the researchers write. "Some even tried to attract the attention of the trainers prior to the test situation, by vocalising and running towards the trainers, and follow their movements."

Understanding how they move ...and how you either help or hinder is so vital!! We, as riders, need to be so very conscious of our position. Are you balanced? Is your horse balanced?

Movement is what horses are all about. In fact, they evolved from the fox terrier- sized Eohippus of 55 million years ago mostly because of their ability to move. Movement is still essential to every horse’s nature and even his life. A horse that cannot move is a horse in trouble. The Anatomy of G...

Always wonder why your horse spooks? Check out how they see to better understand how to approach objects etc

An insight into why horses may spook kindly done by Horses and road safety awareness, please check out their page.

Have any non-horsey people ever wondered why horses 'spook'? Spook meaning jump to the side, run forwards, back up, rear, kick out/buck or even bolt... around cyclists its because they can't hear you or see you until you have almost reached their shoulder, see diagram. The silent cyclist will often take the rider by surprise too! The same applies to lovely walkers ahead who kindly step back out of sight to allow a horse and rider to pass, the horse can't see you but it can hear you so now you have become a hedge monster which they will not want to pass. So cyclists, please call out 'bike behind' then slow down and pass widely and walkers, make yourself seen and talk to us, we won't bite honestly and once we get near you then step back so we can quietly walk past. If you are a dog walker, be kind to your dog and our horses, recall your dog and pop it back on a lead just while we get past each other, your dog might be ok with horses but our horses might not be ok with your dog. We are happy to share our bridleways with other vulnerable users but please look out for horses and be aware of how to pass safely, thank you for reading.
