I've created this website with over 25 classic vehicle salvage yards with 65,000 plus vehicles for parts and dozens of restorable cars and trucks. A lot for under $5,000.
I've also gathered together over 200 businesses that do the important support tasks for restoration and maintaining your ride. Things like rebuild radios and wiper motors, chrome and powder coating, even transporting and insurance. They're all on the site

I run The Old Car Guys website and service network. I've put together a website that has over 25 classic vehicle salvage yards with 65,000 plus cars and trucks and maybe a tank or two. I've also found about 200 folks that do the cool stuff for classic and older cars. Things like rebuild radios and wiper motors and chrome and powder coating.
You can find them all by going to the website. But you have to use the site. There’s too much for me to keep up with and I need to go look for more salvage yards.

More Restoration Tips From The Old Car Guy

1. Decide on your make and model.

2. Find the starting vehicle, Remember the more you start with the less work and time before you get it on the road.

a. Inspect your car very carefully, top to bottom, inside and out; use strong flashlights to inspect the trunk, the engine area, etc. This will help you see the kind of repairs that need to be done to this vehicle. If possible take it to a car shop where it could be lifted to take a good look at the condition from beneath. Here you will determine if the restoration process is worth the time and money.

b. Make sure you have a 'solid' restorable car. Frames, floors, axles, and rust can cost big bucks.

3. Decide the level restoration.

a. Driver restoration: Is the safe operation level. It's fully or close to fully functional and operational condition, they often include part replacement and minor cosmetic adjustments.

b. Street Show: this restoration level involves getting a car into a fully working condition and repairing all major cosmetic problems (body work is required). If judged by a professional it should fall within the 80-89 point range.

c. Show Car: restoring a classic car back to this form often requires professional work, if judged by a professional, there restorations and labor quality will fall within the 90-95 point range.

d. Concourse: this is the highest level of car restoration possible. All the work should be done by professionals, from part replacement to body work. These types of cars are intended for auto shows or private collections and not to be driven. Obviously, the original car to be repaired must be in quite optimal condition to achieve this stage, otherwise a major investment is necessary.

4. After you determine your start point Sit with your parts catalogs and start adding up the cost of after market parts. Consider if salvage yard parts can be substituted.

5. Decide whether you want to work with a "friend who knows how to repair cars" or a professional. It is often recommended not to involve friends and family on such projects as the time and money invested on this process may cause some trouble if the right procedures are not followed. Cars restored by people other than professionals tend to run well for a couple of years and in some cases start to breakdown thereafter.

6. Check with several restoration professional for estimates or hourly rates

7. Start the restoration process, Plan your work and work your plan. Visit the car shop as often as possible to make sure the right work is being done. If this is not possible then have your mechanic send you periodical picture updates and ask them to keep a work log.

8. Chose of paint and wheels can add to the cool factor and resell value. Choose wisely.

9. Not all the parts need to be ordered at once but always be ahead of the part game. Time is money so if your doing the ordering make sure your builder has what he needs.

10. When all major restorations are done run a close and detailed inspection just like it was done during to make sure everything is OK. Take it for a ride and see if it works correctly.

11. Do the "punch out list" of the things they missed or any changes you want to do.

12. Remember do proper maintenance on your classic. Time to get the motor manual out and make sure the lube store hits ant the grease fittings and fluid levels products.
