ege, Joe Shoemaker joined the school’s VICA chapter (now SkillsUSA,) where he placed first in the Collision Repair Technology contest and second in Automotive Refinish Technology. Those successes brought scholarships, after which he earned a degree from Pittsburg State University for business. For more than a decade, he then worked as a painter – his passion – at a variety of collision repair shops, including a high-volume independent, a dealership, and the one he said he most models his operations after, a specialist in premium cars including Ferraris, Porsches, and BMWs. Before coming to work full time at the business early this year, Jennifer Shoemaker worked for a State Farm agent and, later, an independent insurance broker for a total of 16 years. Keeping an insurance company from pushing a customer toward one of its DRP shops requires educating customers about their options, she said, adding that, often, customers are led to believe they have no choice.
