Stephen Curry recently started wearing contacts

According to this recently published Sports Illustrated article, NBA star Steph Curry found some relief for his Keratoconus with contacts…but what exactly is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease where the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This cone shape deflects light as it enters the eye on its way to the light-sensitive retina, causing blurry and distorted vision.

In the early stages of the disease your vision may be helped with glasses or contact lenses. It’s also possible Curry could also benefit from a relatively new FDA-approved method of treatment of corneal cross-linking.

Cross-linking is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a special UV light and eye drops to strengthen the collagen fibers in the cornea to stop it from bulging.

Carolina Eye cornea surgeons, John W. French, M.D. and Richard B. Phinney, M.D., are pleased to offer corneal cross-linking to Keratoconus patients who would benefit from the procedure. For more information call (910) 295-2100.

Steph Curry has a cornea condition and recently addressed the problem by getting contact lenses.

The Question Builder app helps patients prepare for medical visits and organize their medical information so they can maximize the time they have with their doctors, nurses and others on their health care team.

Information entered into the Question Builder app resides on the user’s own device and is available for free on iTunes and Google Play. Find out more at https://tinyurl.com/y6yfbpq

Carolina Eye surgeon, Anna Fakadej M.D., recently presented at the first of two annual symposiums hosted by Carolina Eye Associates.

Her topic, How to make your Smartphone an "Eye Phone", was popular with both optometrists and technicians in attendance as it provided practical, everyday solutions for the visually impaired.

Many requested this information - and it is useful to those who are not visually impaired as well! Dr. Fakadej is happy to share the first of several posts from her presentation.

Carolina Eye Associates glaucoma surgeon, Winston Garris, M.D., became the first in Carolinas to implant the new, recently FDA-approved Hydrus Microstent.

Carolina Eye Associates glaucoma surgeon, Winston Garris, M.D., became the first in Carolinas to implant the new, recently FDA-approved Hydrus Microstent. Developed by Ivantis, the Hydrus Microstent is the world’s first “intracanalicular scaffold” for the treatment of mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

The device is designed to be less invasive than traditional glaucoma surgery and is implanted during cataract surgery using the same microsurgical incisions.

The Hydrus Microstent is designed to relieve the high intraocular pressure (IOP) that is common in patients with POAG. Primary open-angle glaucoma causes the patient’s eye pressure to increase because the eye’s fluid channels become blocked.

The tiny Hydrus scaffold is designed to be inserted into the primary fluid canal (called the Schlemm’s canal) of the eye and open the channel to allow blocked fluid to flow more freely, thus reducing high IOP. In most cases, this will also allow the patient to reduce their dependency on IOP lowering eye drops, which can often be expensive.

Carolina Eye Associates continues to be on the forefront of technology and offers a number of minimally-invasive and traditional glaucoma surgical options to meet the individual needs of each patient.

For more information on our glaucoma services, call (800) 733-5357.

Fireworks and celebrations go together, especially during the Fourth of July. The American Academy of Ophthalmology offers the following safety tips for preventing eye injuries from fireworks:

 Never let children play with fireworks.
 View fireworks from at least 500 feet away.
 Only trained professionals should light fireworks.
 Don't touch any unexploded fireworks remains. Instead, notify the fire or police department.

If an eye injury from fireworks occurs, remember:

 Seek medical attention immediately.
 Do not rub your eyes.
 Do not rinse your eyes.
 Do not apply pressure.
 Do not remove any objects that are stuck in the eye.
 Do not apply ointments or take any blood-thinning pain medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

Don’t let an accident spoil your celebration. Be safe and follow basic firework safety. Better yet, enjoy Independence Day by attending a city-sponsored safe fireworks display.

Happy National Sunglasses Day!

Today we celebrate the importance of wearing ultraviolet (UV)- protective sunwear and eyewear. UV radiation is often recognized as the culprit for sunburns and skin cancer, but most don’t realize the damaging impact the wavelengths inflict on their vision.

Just as the sun’s unfiltered UV rays can burn skin, they can also harm unprotected eyes. A full day outside without protection can cause immediate, temporary issues, such as swollen or red eyes and hypersensitivity to light. Years of cumulative exposure can cause cancer of the eye or eyelid, and accelerate conditions like cataracts and age-regulated macular degeneration.

National Sunglasses Day serves as a reminder that sunglasses are a major health necessity – regardless of whether it’s sunny or cloudy, warm or cold – and they are key to protecting long-term eye health.
