It is with a heavy heart that the decision has been made to cancel the Southern Pines CDE, scheduled to be held April 9-12 at the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford, North Carolina. Uncertainty, especially in the short-term, due to the Corona Virus has led to this disappointing conclusion to this popular event.
On Friday FEI recommended cancellation of all FEI events. Also, on Friday, USEF suspended all USEF owned events, selection trials, training camps, clinics, and activities for the next 30 days and strongly recommended that competition organizers suspend all USEF licensed competitions across the country for the next 30 days and that equestrians not compete for the next 30 days.
Although Southern Pines is neither FEI nor USEF sanctioned, the fact remains that the Corona Virus (COVID-19) is a serious threat. Asking volunteers, officials, competitors, and their families and support teams to put their health at risk is not something we as organizers believe prudent.
We were very much looking forward to hosting the ADS North American Preliminary and Intermediate Championships and welcoming the ADS Board of Directors who planned to hold their board meeting on the Monday following the event.
Southern Pines CDE has been known for its unparalleled social activities – our welcome dinner with Talbert’s famous ribs, and our competitors’ party with the endless salad bar and dessert table plus mouth-watering beef tenderloin. Southern Pines CDE would not be the same without its social events which would have been cancelled if the event were to be held.
This year’s event was to be the final event for organizers Claire Reid, Kelly Valdes, and Secretary Ann Pringle. We looked forward to giving them a well-deserved ‘retirement’ celebration, and welcoming Daphne White who has stepped up to the plate to continue the event in 2021 with a new team.
We want to thank all our loyal sponsors and volunteers for supporting Southern Pines CDE for the past 13 years. We hope you’ve enjoyed being part of the event. And of course, thank you to all the competitors who are the event.
