Every place like this has an origin story.

Ours is just a little harder to verify.

It started when Doug and Christa bought 71 acres on the water in Shell K**b, Missouri. The original plan was pretty simple: a place at the lake where friends and family could disappear for the weekend, camp under the trees, cook outside, spend too much time on the water and stay up later than the camp host at Campbell Point wanted us to.

Then something strange started happening.

Friends brought friends.

Those friends brought more friends.

Before long, we’d look around the property on a Saturday night and realize we were surrounded by people we’d never met before — except somehow they weren’t really strangers anymore. They were lake friends.

People came for the water, the boats, the food, the campfires and the music. But what kept happening was community. Everybody seemed to share the same appreciation for being outside, slowing down and having a good time with good people.

The property grew. So did the idea.

Eventually, we carved out part of the land and opened it commercially so there would always be room for a few more friends.

Things may have gotten slightly out of hand after that.

Area71 grew into gas stations, restaurants, nightclubs, live music, events and more than a few stories that are probably better left around the campfire.

And then, after all of that, Area71 somehow found its way back to where it began.

Camping.

The lake.

Friends.

A fire burning somewhere after dark.

As for the name?

Some say it came from the original 71 acres.

Others point out that if you're coming from Kansas City, US 71 takes you south toward the lake.

There have also been reports of unexplained lights over the Ozarks.

Aliens? Maybe.

UFOs? Probably.

Coincidence?

We don't discuss that.

What we can confirm is that Area71 has always been less about a piece of property and more about the people who somehow find their way here.

So if you've made it this far, welcome.

You're probably not a stranger anymore.

Time flies!

Hearing the old store will have gas and start reopening this Wednesday! Wishing the best for the new owners and look forward to having services on YY again.
