HIGHFIELD FINAL REVIEW…

We were lucky to get the seam failure under control without seeing leak migration.

Mike has taken excellent care of the tube fabric; that was a huge help. We had the all-important discussion about inflation pressure this morning. It’s imperative to not leave these glued-seam PVC vessels pumped to spec in the sun!

AB INSPECTION…

The tubes aren’t chalky and dry; we just have that pesky delamination to deal with. It’s important to get patches over those areas before they become leaks.

WE SUSPECTED SEAM FAILURE…

and we confirmed it today. On the sunny side, Steve was able to locate the origin quickly. We really didn’t want to have to pull the rubrail along the entire port side!

I’ll run with my plan to repair this area, reinforce it, and patch the seam at the cone. When that’s complete (and has had adequate cure time), we’ll reinspect to see if leak migration has occurred.

Mike has taken good care of the tube fabric, so I have high hopes for the blow out being relegated to this area, alone.

THE ONLY CORNERS ONE SHOULD BE CUTTING IN THIS LINE OF WORK…

are those square edges of patches (gotta shoot for a nice radius).

Slapping patches on without resolving the root of the problem doesn’t make the problem go away.

My inside patch went down beautifully; we’ll be able to continue with the rest of our prep and gluing tomorrow.

I SAID IT WOULD BE A F’ING MIRACLE…

and a miracle we do have; WOO HOO!

The other shop cut the hole for the valve all wonky. What was there was never gonna work.

I don’t yet know if what we’ve done will stop the leaks (we’re in the curing period now), but I was able to get the inside patch to sit perfectly. The Universe was looking out for me today!

HIGHFIELD FINAL REVIEW…

(not the “final inspection”; that took place yesterday).

Fast approval allowed us to hum right in to prep and patch on the same day the boat arrived. That was awesome, as the vessel was able to cure over the weekend.

We performed the final inspection, removed extraneous adhesive, and applied exterior sealant yesterday. I gave the boat a quick clean this morning; wanted to see if I could remove a few stains. All good!

HIGHFIELD INSPECTION…

This vessel is a 2019 model. I’m concerned about the seam leaks. My plan is to clean, prep, reglue, and reinforce the seams; straightforward work. I worry about leak migration, though.

The warranty period has tolled. It wouldn’t surprise me if the leaks pop up in the next vulnerable area. When that happens, the boat moves into the “NOT ECONOMICALLY PRACTICAL TO REPAIR” category.
