🚗 New Brakes Squealing? It Could Be as Simple as Bedding Them In.
If you’ve recently had new brake pads and rotors installed and notice a squeal, don’t panic. In some cases, the brakes may simply need to be properly bedded in.
Many repair shops don’t perform the bedding procedure during installation—or don’t mention that it should be done afterward. While not every brake squeal is caused by this, proper bedding can often help reduce noise and improve braking performance.
How to Bed Your Brakes:
✅ Find a safe road with little traffic.
1. Make 8–10 moderate stops from about 35 mph to 10 mph. Don’t come to a complete stop.
2. Make 2–3 firm stops from 45–50 mph to 10 mph.
3. Drive for 5–10 minutes with minimal braking to let the brakes cool.
4. Avoid holding the brake pedal while stopped immediately afterward, as this can leave uneven pad deposits on the rotors.
Benefits of Proper Brake Bedding
✔ Can reduce brake squeal
✔ Improves braking performance
✔ Helps create an even transfer layer on the rotors
✔ May extend the life of your pads and rotors
If your brakes are still squealing after the bedding procedure, it’s a good idea to have them inspected to check for glazing, hardware issues, contamination, or other causes.
