Portal assembly series Part 5: Gears!
Some would say that this is the most critical step, and we would agree! Gotta remember to get those gears in there 🫡

We have so many specifications that go into our gear design. Instead of diving into the boring stuff that goes on behind the scenes, here’s the important part:
We warranty all our applications up to a 40” tire. We do that because we trust in the strength of our gear design 💪 so much design work, testing, and development went into these before they ever reached a customer so we know for sure they’ll last.

Portal Assembly Series: Part 3 - Tone rings, Hubs and More bearings!

A critical piece of this design to function is a tone ring for the ABS system, so that your vehicle can function exactly as OEM and maintain all vehicle systems required by the wheel speed sensors. We press this tone ring into the intermediate bearings so that the system also sees your factory gear reduction. You’ll then offset the portal gear reduction with tire size changes in your vehicle, simple as that!

We also a variety of options for wheel studs, including an upgrade for most vehicles to M14 studs which in most cases are larger than factory.

On to the next step where we start putting everything together!

Portal Assembly Series: Part 2 - Install bearings and seals!

In total we have 32 bearings, 12 seals, and 3 pins that need to be pressed in precisely and accurately for each individual customer set of portals.

For this effort, we designed custom fixturing for our hydraulic press that allows us to hold all the components flat and straight to ensure a consistent press fit and location for each of these items. We also have custom bearing press inserts to ensure we push the bearings in equally on all sides and to significantly speed up the process of installing when compared to standard sized bearing press plates from a kit.

Also Introducing our favorite tool in the shop, our electric over hydraulic press! This thing is amazing for pressing items quickly and repeatably.

New Instagram Series! We’re gonna walk everyone through the full process of assembling and checking our portals before they ever see a customers rig. In this many part series we’ll dive into each and every step we do in our assembly shop to make sure we ship out the best possible product to you!

Starting today with a real simple step; lay out all the parts! While we lay out all the parts we’re doing a comprehensive visual check of every component and seal to make sure they have no manufacturing defects. We’re also cross referencing each part with our detailed quality measurement data we receive from our suppliers for each and every component to make sure they hit our specifications.

It may not look like a lot in this video, but this is one of our longest steps!

Excited to show off all the nitty gritty details that go into shipping our products soon!

What’s your favorite rig to run Fordyce? Ours is now the GX470 on portals! Had an epic time at California 4WheelDriveAssoc. Sierra Trek. Hard to beat some awesome wheeling and a beautiful view when you’re done at Meadow Lake.

GX made quick work of winch hill 3, 4, and 5!
