France's iconic Citroen D wagon is probably the ultimate Euro people and stuff hauler. The wagon was often looked upon as the 'odd' stepchild of the D sedan by collectors and were not highly sought after in past years. That has recently changed and wagons (Breaks, Familiales) can now fetch $40K-plus for nice versions. This particular 1966 ID21F on EBAY at https://www.ebay.com/itm/333127887497 seems to be scary at first - maybe nothing more than a parts car - but close inspection of the photos do seem to indicate that it has excellent restoration potential. First off - everthing seems to be there - even the missing radiator and air shroud from the engine bay pic are shown in a separate photo. But most importantly, the wagon problem areas - rust holes around the rear quarter windows, hatch rust and edge rust along the wagon's steel roof are not evident. The car obviously needs a lot of work and it is an vegetable-fluid LHS car so expect extensive hydraulic repairs - but, if bought cheap enough (current bidding is at $650 with the Reserve Not Met), it could at least be restored without extensive rust repairs - a budget killer in most restorations.

I wouldn't classify this car as much as a 'FIND' but rather an 'AVOID.' People frequently have asked me what was the worst car I have ever owned (and I have owned dozens - if not close to a hundred) - the Maserati 425, without hesitation, was the absolute worst. In the late 1980s, our shop was asked to become the Maserati Authorized Service Center for San Diego - we were already servicing most of them and the original dealer had thrown in the towel and moved on to selling and servicing Porsches. We foolishly accepted and we were instantly inundated with late model Biturbos (the 425 and 430 were 4-door versions) for warranty service. Maserati only paid a fraction of what it took to do the warranty work and the Biturbos would frequently return to have the same problem warranteed. I remember swapping out dozens of fuse boxes, distributors, waterpumps, cam towers, etc etc. We had several customers who literally handed over their keys and pink slips because they got tired of the continual garage visits - the cars were a mechanical nightmare. One of those cars was a cosmetically pristine 425. I pampered the car mechanically but it seemed to get towed more than actually driven. I did less than 1,000 miles on the car over a 2-year period before I sold it for a fraction of what I had into it. When it did work well - which wasn't often - the car was a lethal rocket with an opulent leather and faux wood interior - it did look great sitting in my driveway. So, being forewarned, here is the 3.0L engine version (hence the 30 in the 430 model designation) for sale on Ebay at:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-430/312539344878?hash=item48c4cbefee:g:8MsAAOSw6JZclYMl

As exotic cars go, the British-built Marcos 1600 GT can be a relatively affordable purchase. Most decent looking and running cars sell for between $20K to $40K - but there are some notable concerns when considering one for purchase. The 1600 GT's exotic swoopy body is fiberglass so rust is obviously not a concern - at least in the body. Even the chassis is not prone to rusting, at least for the pre-1969 cars (1969-on cars changed to steel chassis) as they were made out of 'wood' - essentially 386 pieces of plywood glued together. The light 'wood' chassis did help to make the Marcos a very competitive racer and are still coveted as entries in Historic races but...
The wood chassis can be prone to cracking and failure when the car is fitted with larger wheels and tires or with a more powerful engine. Water damage can also take its toll and is usually caused by water leaks around the door or windshield. The wood repair cannot be taken lightly and can be costly if done correctly. This 1967 1600 GT (1600 signifies the Ford inline-4 engine displacement) is listed as an older restoration and does seem to be in very good condition. A close inspection of the chassis might be necessary but the advertised price of $27,900 seems reasonable enough for a car that will probably get you more stares per dollar than any Italian exotic.

This well-presented Traction Avant (11CV) is available for sale in the Los Angeles area. Listed on Craigslist at: https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/d/oxnard-1940-citroen/6836097560.html - the owner describes it as a 1940 model and even has a decorative license plate on the car saying '40 CITROEN.' Not quite accurate. It is indeed a Citroen but not a 1940 model. The hump trunk indicates that the vintage is off by at least 12 years as the hump trunk wasn't featured on the car until 1952 - and could be as late as a 1955 model. It is not the smaller Legere (or 11BL) model as the larger body deems it to be a Normale (11BN). Despite the inaccurate age, the 11CV seems quite presentable with no evidence of rust (although there are no detail pics) and very clean interior. The owner states he starts it regularly and that it has been in his family for 30 years. There is no indication of any recent mechanical work or whether it needs any so a little detective work might be needed to guage its road worthiness. It is priced slightly high at $22K although the seller will take offers. Might be a good buy at mid-to-high teen$.

EUCLASSICFINDS Exclusive:
The Citroen SM grew out of a brief marriage between Citroen and Maserati when Citroen decided it needed a 'Halo' car to boost interest in the marque. Built between 1970 and 1975, less than 13,000 SMs were built - most powered by the 2.7L Maserati V6 engine (early ones were carburated and 1973-on models were fuel injected). North America however never got the fuel-injected version as they got the larger 2.95L carburated V6 (commonly referred as the 3.0L) which was, externally, virtually identical to the 2.7L engine but had bigger pistons and more radical camshaft lift. This particular 1974 5-speed model has the European turning headlights and is located in Canada. If interested, contact me for more pictures and details at: [email protected].

I have always admired the Land Rover Defender models and, if I ever had space enough and money enough, there likely would be one sitting in my garage. I would therefor casually monitor Land Rover sales and notice that 'Santana' models would sell for considerably less than true Land Rover models. But why? and what is a Santana? Land Rover Santana, SA was a Spanish automobile company which essentially assembled the Land Rover in kit form. However, there are significant differences between the British built and Santana versions. The Santana plant was incorporating 'improvements' into their Land Rovers when the British plant was unable to do so - mostly due to financial problems that British Leyland, its parent company, was having at that time. Thus the Santana model would have disc brakes, turbo-diesel engines and a better suspension than its British counterpart. Essentially, during the 1970s, the Santana was the better car - so why is it selling for less now? The problem is that the Santana company no longer exists - closing its doors in 2010. There is virtually no aftermarket parts supply for some of the uniquely-Santana parts. Need a brake caliper for your car? - or even brake pads? and your garage will be scouring parts suppliers around the world to source them. More than a few Santanas are languishing in garages throughout the USA for weeks or months awaiting parts or even the availability of a talented craftsman to make the part. More than a few Santana owners are willing to transfer the parts-sourcing headache to the car's next owner - hence the lower prices.
This particular 1978 Santana is priced at $20,900 with the ability to make an offer. The photos show it to be rust free with some minor damages to the body. Overall, the car looks pretty good and, if it was a British version, would probably have already been sold by now. Check it out at:

I guess this is technically not a European car as it was manufactured in Dana Point, California but its DNA is definitely European. Hawk Vehicles, an upstart car manufacturer originally based out of Illinois, figured out that constructing a 3-wheeled car would essentially bypass the DOT and EPA regulations enforced on its 4-wheeled brethren. By having only 3 wheels, the Trihawk would essentially be registered as a motorcycle (you'll need to wear a helmet in some states) and no money would need to be spent on meeting smog or crash requirements. The Trihawk was manufactured between 1982 and 1985 and original plans were to use a motorcycle or even an air-cooled VW engine (air cooling was needed as engine-bay space was limited and there would be no room for a radiator, hoses, fans, etc). Hawk eventually approached Citroen and was sold a Citroen GSA 1299cc 4-cylinder air-cooled engine and transmission and the Trihawk was born. Utilizing mostly suspension and brake parts from the Renault parts bin, the Trihawk has an attractive but simple fiberglass body, 2 seats, a rollbar and is a hoot to drive. Only 96 cars were built during its production run and almost all were sold on the West Coast. This particular 1984 Trihawk, for sale on EBay with a supposed 23K miles on it (odometer is broken), is residing in Hawaii and has a Buy-It-Now on it for $15,000 with the ability to make an offer. Other than a few nicks and scratches on the body, the car looks pretty good cosmetically and buyer states "everything works except for the odometer and gas guage." There have been a few Trihawks advertised for sale in excess for $30K so, as long as the car is mechanically sound, the car's sales price is extremely reasonable (you will probably have to factor in shipping costs if you want it back on the mainland). Been looking for a rare 1950s Italian exotic but can't afford the Alfas, Maseratis or Ferraris of that era? How about a
car that is even rarer than some 1950s Ferraris or Maseratis? Here is a 1950 Fiat 1500E "Riviera" Convertible By Stabilimenti Farina of which only a handful were ever built and even fewer still survive. Stablimenti Farina was a renowed coachbuilder in Italy from 1906 to 1953 who employed numerous notable designers including Battista Farina (of Pininfarina fame), Pietro Frua (designer of the Maserati A6G and Mistral) and Giovanni Michelotti (designer for Ferrari, Maserati, Triumph and BMW). The Riviera Convertible was based on the 1950 "big" Fiat - the 1500e in its final year of production. The 1500e had been in production since 1938 and only 45,000 built over the entire production run of which only 1,700 were the 'e' version . The 1500 model was mostly sold by Fiat as a 4-door saloon or 2-door Cabriolet but the factory also supplied rolling chassis to several coach builders. This particular car appears to be an aborted restoration attempt as body work seems to have been started and drivetrain removed. There is even a handful of extra mechanical parts although the bumpers, grille, passenger seat and other interior parts are not evident in any pics. The drivetrain is the same 1493cc straight-6 engine as the factory models so sourcing a used drivetrain should not be impossible. The grille, bumpers and seat could be a little more difficult to source and might have to involve some talented craftsmen to construct from scratch. The car is not overly expensive at $29,500 although a professional restoration could push your eventual cost past 6 figures. Check it out at:
