This week in Intro to Welding, students were given the task of creating a 4" cube from cardboard and aluminum foil hvac tape. The tolerance was zero, meaning every edge must be exactly four inches. We talked briefly about kerf, reviewed measurements to 1/16" and discussed speed square use.

While they worked, some figured out that they needed to include the material thickness for some measurements. I played some 90's rock in the background. Bands like Fuel, Smashing Pumpkins and Chevelle. One student was over in the corner, jamming out. He knew every word. Much to my surprise, there is now a genre called "divorced dad rock." On Thursday, I found a YouTube music channel that made me want to put on some New Balance shows and cargo shorts. I was surprised at how many kids knew these songs. Some were even singing along!

Yesterday, our first two welders arrived. Both are WeldPro brand, and came through Buckeye Welding. The first is a multiprocess MIG210LCD. Three more of these are on their way. Another machine is the TIG200ACDC, that can be used to TIG weld aluminum. This was donated to our program by WeldPro USA. How cool!

What a Car Show! The Skills Club students did a great job organizing the event, and the turnout was amazing! Thank you to North of the Border and Mother Clucker's food trucks for feeding everyone. The cars and trucks are always the highlight, and boy were there some sweet rides. Thank you to Schmidt Construction for bringing out a grader! I think my favorite was the 2023 Pike's Peak Hill Climb winning truck. Maybe the COE, or the Model A. Maybe the elegant Continental or Excaliber. I can't choose.

From a personal perspective, these car shows are my favorite time of year. Our community comes out and supports our students and their program. I spent the entire time talking with people, answering questions and accepting offers of support. Local welders, collectors and tire supply vendors have all offered to donate supplies, arrange a shop visit and to volunteer their time. All I can say in return is thank you. This auto and welding program has reached its current success because of Elizabeth, the car show community and generous businesses.

This is Jim with Buckeye Welding. He has been instrumental is the process of adding quality welding machines to our program. Soon, and as long as the plans works out, we will have four new WeldPro 210LCD multiprocess machines. Later in the year, Perkins grant money will be used to purchase 6 Hobart Multi Handler 200 machines with all consumables.

Today, Jim stopped by, saying that he had a few things to donate. He shows up in a pickup, drops off 12 125cf bottles, six argon and six MIG mix, then tells me to grab these three boxes. Inside were welding gloves, grinding discs and flapper wheels. Tons of them! This just made my day. Thank You to Buckeye Welding!!

Yesterday, students in Auto 3 completed technical drawings for a metal storage rack, too be used outside the new building. Today, the two best ideas were combined and the final draft was agreed upon by the class.

Auto 2 students are learning about power steering systems, both electric and hydraulic.

Intro to Welding students have completed their stick welding module, at least for now. Every student was tested on their ability to strike an arc with a 6013 electrode and run it for two inches or more. Everyone passed. I continue to be impressed by the welds that they are putting down. The examples in the picture are from a group of three young women that really demonstrated skill and technique today.

Auto 2 had a fun couple of days, competing against each other in a Pit Stop Challenge. We practiced our wheel installation policy steps, cleaning contact surfaces, using torque limiting sticks and torque wrenches. After the students practiced the steps, they raced each other.

The lifts in the new shop are being installed! And they look marvelous. In the northwest bay, a 14,000 lb drive-on lift sits away from the wall to accommodate our donated alignment machine. The remaining three bays have twin post Rotary lifts. Soon, the tire machine, wheel balancer and air compressor will move in.

This week in the Intro to Welding class, students continued to practice their stick welding skills. They did exceptionally well, working with the entry-level machines that we have, at least for now.

What struck me most was the veteran auto students teaching the first timers. I didn't have to do a thing, except some reminders about fundamental skills. It was impressive, watching a high school junior or senior coaching a peer. The results of this are below.

In Auto 2, students are learning to remove and install outer tie rod ends. In Auto 3, students are working on my own truck, adding off-road lights and an AirLift compressor. In Auto 4, students are stripping down the 95 2500 Dodge, getting it ready for a Kaiser Jeep body swap.

Hayden, a 2024 EHS graduate and auto shop student, returned today to say hello. He's a Load Master with the Marines now, flying on C-130s.

Our students go on to change the world in a variety of different ways, and I'm proud of each and every one of them. I especially enjoy when they come back to visit and tell me a few stories.

This year, we have added an Intro to Welding class. Last week, we started with PPE, including helmets, gloves, and shirts. The students paid close attention to the safe use, setting adjustments and proper storage of the equipment.

On Thursday, we fired up a few stick welders. I was very impressed with the skill that the students demonstrated, striking an arc, maintaining proper arc length, approach angle and hand placement.

If you are have welding experience and are interested in volunteering once our building is complete, please contact me at [email protected].

It has been a wild first three years for the Auto Shop! Working out of a modular classroom was limiting, but the school, District and community have all been tremendous supporters. Looking forward to this school year, enrollment is at 228 students. This was the result of the addition of a new class, Intro to Welding, with 65 students! We have also added a part-time auto instructor, Scott Snyder, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. He also shares my passion for student success before and after graduation.

Now, on to the building. We are nearing completion, with a goal to be ready before school starts. Grants, donations and generous contractors continue to bring us momentum. Once complete, this facility will duplicate a working shop, while focusing on skill acquisition. We have tons of equipment and tools, ready to go. This list includes a four-post alignment lift, 3 two-post lifts, air system, hand tools, diagnostic equipment and specialty tool sets.

Once we receive the Certificate of Occupancy, there will be a need for help. Moving and setup will need to happen quickly.

I returned today from an educators workshop hosted by the Navy. Selfishly, these trips are a very nice getaway, and we are allowed to see and do some once-in-a-lifetime things! Professionally, these trips allow me to fully immerse myself in our nation's modern Navy, and better understand the career opportunities that are offered.

Active Navy members guided us, and were a wealth of knowledge. Chief is a nuclear engineer, Master Chief was formerly in charge of the Navy's working dog kennels, and Skipper has done nearly everything.

The ships, and fast-attack sub U.S.S. Scranton, we saw were full of active service members that were happy to tell their story. Learning the different ways that these young people entered the Navy helped me better understand the pathways for my students to consider. The opportunities are plentiful, and advancement once you're enlisted is expected.
