As I come to my first Mother's Day under that title, I wanted to take a moment to say Happy Mother's Day to all my clients, especially those who have added babies to their families since this time last year.
First time moms Hayley, Ashley, Melanie and Bridget.
Grace, who is expecting her rainbow in a matter of days. 🌈
And third time mom, Brandy.

In the past 3 year years, I've had the honor of photographing bio mothers, step mothers, adoptive mothers, IVF mothers, grandmothers, and I'm sure many who are still longing to be known by that title. ❤

My prayers go out to all those expecting or adopting during these scary and unknown times.

Did you know I wrote two children's books in Middle School, with photos in place of illustrations? Neither was published outside of the original copy, but one was a finalist in a contest with 3000 entries. Being a children's book author is my retirement plan. Being dyslexic, not very many books held my attention growing up, but I have had several children's books memorized since I was 5. I can still recite them to this day. I would talk in rhyme if I could. Adult books are often depressing and too closely related to real life. I live my life with the childlike innocence and whimsy of fictional bearkind.

You see so often people wondering why in the world wedding photography cost so much. I mean, $2000÷6 hours is $333 an hour! That's crazy, right?? So how many hours does a photographer actually work just on your wedding?
Lets say a photographer/videographer spends an hour or 2 on the day you book going over packages, answering questions, drawing up a contract and invoice.
Then most will want to meet in person, even if you dont do an engagement, that's another 1-2 hours. Then there will be 1-2 hours of drawing up a timeline so that things go smoothly on the day of. Then on the day of there will be about 3 hours on top of the wedding time for getting batteries and cards ready and packing equipment. That's assuming they're local. Then 4-12 hours on the day of coverage. Then there's editing about 75-100 images for every hour of wedding coverage. Even if it took 1 minute per image, that would be almost 9 hours, but that's not including creating a lightroom catalog or culling (narrowing down from 2000-500). Most spend 30-40 hours on editing. Then time spent exporting, uploading, and creating an online gallery, then emailing you to let you know its ready. Assuming that you don't order a USB or prints, that's about 42 hours on the low side of my estimates. Now take your photography budget and divide it by 42-52 hours and ask yourself if it is still "unreasonable". ❤

Having a wedding photographer who's personality meshes with yours is ultimately the most important deciding factor. This is why you see those gorgeous photos of flawless young photographers sitting in a cute chair in front of a white background, leaning towards and camera, and laughing as they gingerly hold a coffee mug that says #girlboss with their blinged out fingers. If that looks like you in your spare time, hire one of them! The only thing I have in common with those photos is that I am 25 (26 on Saturday 🥳). I dream of being one of those girls, but no matter how hard I try, I will always be me.
If I did a branding session, I would be in my living room drinking a fountain Dr. Pepper, munching on a bag of salt and vinegar chips, wearing jeans, an oversized hoodie, memory foam Sketchers, a ponytail, and no makeup. Enveloped in a fuzzy blanket cocoon because I'm literally always cold. I'm not going to pretend that I wake up and fall asleep looking like a magazine. I'm just a real person, who is easy to talk to and pretty darn dorky.
My idea of a good time is hitting up all the Goodwills, flea markets, antique stores, and estate sales in a tri-county area with my family. My favorite TV show to watch when I'm home alone is Sabrina: The Teenage Witch. I edit my photos in a guest bedroom, not a pure white office with a white desk, peacock chair, and succulents. I don't do studio sessions because I want my work to reflect real life. I don't have sit down ordering sessions because I would be awful at sales. I'm not going to pressure you into buying something you don't want. I want your big day to be about you. Not me. Not my brand. Not my dance moves, because all I can do is the Cha Cha Slide. I'm laid back and always cracking a joke. You don't have to be like me to work with me - I learned years ago that I am unique! And you are too, so tell me a little bit about yourself and let's capture your love!

Magoffin and Floyd county students! I was just thinking about something that made me really sad. My feed probably won't be filled with dozens of photos of gorgeous satin dresses this year!
I want to see your pretty dresses (or tuxes, but I know those probably aren't obtainable right now)! Show them off and the one who gets the most "likes" and reactions on their comment will get a 20 min "Prom" session to be used when things get going again. ❤️
Ends May 10th at 4pm.

In Tennessee I had a page full of go to locations for any and all occasions. Starting off in a new place, I have to start from scratch, but trust, as soon as we are able to start working, I have been location scouting on my own to be prepared for future sessions! Can't wait to try out this spot on my couples, seniors, and expecting ladies!

Something you might not know about me is that my husband is an ordained Pastor. What this couple didn't know was that their spur of the moment officiant happened to be married to a wedding photographer. I woke up yesterday morning with a completely different vision of how the day would go. By the end of the day my husband was officiating a wedding and of course I couldn't help but snap a few photos. Here are some couple's photos we took behind the church where my husband is Pastor after the ceremony. Their original wedding plans in Tennessee were canceled, and it was a dreary rainy day, but that couldn't stop Cassandra and Shane from having an intimate church elopement with

Whenever I hear someone say they've never watched The Andy Griffith Show, I get pretty sad. It's always been a pretty big part of my life and the thing that I quote the most often. It's always been our thing with me and my parents, especially my dad. My husband and I have never been to Disney together, but we have been to Mount Airy, NC, a town dedicated to the show.
But most importantly, even in the 60's they understood the importance of printing your photos. One of my favorite lines to quote from the show is when Barney sets up a makeshift surveillance camera to catch a criminal and accidentally takes a photo of himself. Gomer runs in with the prints and Barney slaps an 8x10 down on the counter saying "There is your criminal!" revealing a photo of himself. Embarrassed, he doesn't appreciate the way I do when Gomer replies "You take a real great picture barn. Me, I never do. Mrs Mason said she could get you some prints made. You can give one to Aunt Bea. One to Thelma Lou. You can keep one at the office. And they make real great presents. You can get some wallet sized ones.."

If Gomer can understand the importance of prints, why are your walls and scrapbooks still empty?

Below is a sketch of Barney I bought at an auction for a few dollars years ago. I know nothing about the artist, but it is about 20x24" inches, not including the frame, and usually displays prominently on our walls as a conversation piece.

Ignore the marks on the glass, I'm still finding messes from the other day when my husband sprayed Raid all over the house trying to get a wasp. 🤦‍♀️

American Pickers on History

This is fun! I'd love to hear everybody's answers! I could answer a zillion things, but 2 examples would be a large turn of the century portrait of Abraham Lincoln (it's completely unlike any you've ever seen) and a huge framed pencil sketch of Barney Fife.

What’s something in your home right now that most people probably don’t have in theirs?

Anyone learn any new skills lately?
Today I learned, for the first time, the Puppet Warp Tool in Photoshop. I've always seen those beautiful photos where photographers extend dresses, but assumed it could only be done by taking lots of different photos with the fabric in different positions in real life! Being able to do this with nothing but my computer opens up so many doors!

Love that this sweet family already booked me for their next child, keeping with the tradition of the Before and After package where we do one session in the Fall and one in the Spring. These are so much fun!

Jessica and Marty's wedding day has almost come and gone. Instead of celebrating picnic style today, we're hunkered down, 300 miles apart. If you know a Spring 2020 couple, give them a virtual hug for me. 💕

*The Wedding Of Your Dreams May Be Possible, Even If Yur Wedding Already Happened*
Were you or someone you know disappointed to have a smaller, less elaborate wedding than what you envisioned? Send me a photo of you in your wedding clothes and tell me a little about the location, season, etc that you dreamed of and I will build your dream wedding image for you.
This is a sample I created last year because I loved the solemn fairy tale feel of Kassidy and Nathan's expressions and pose in this photo. This is the perfect opportunity to your mountain top, desert, etc wedding that you weren't able to make happen.

These images would be $30 because they do take time to complete.
Just let me know if you are interested and what images you have to work with, whether it be from a courthouse elopement or intimate outdoor wedding.

Images must not have been taken by another photographer without express written consent.

Happy Easter from our family to yours! We actually took Easter pictures twice this year, both times self portraits. I wanted to post, because I always hear people talk about being sad that it is overcast for their sessions and not realizing that this is a photographers paradise! Both photos were taken around the same area, no shade, two different days, one day overcast, one day sunny. With a blue eyed family, I wanted to show the difference this can make both from shadows on faces and squinting caused by the sun.

Ever research photographers and notice that dozens produce nearly identical work?

Many times this is because of presets. Presets are created by popular photogs and then sold to thousands to emulate the same look. I've never fallen in love with any of these looks for my own work, and that is why all of my images are individually edited. There is absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing presets, and this makes it super easy for you as a client to find someone you love in your budget and with the right chemistry because there may be a variety producing similar work so you have options to choose from. But I just wanted to pop in and explain the reason why I edit the way I do.

I edited this first image of Benjen to my liking and then copied the settings. When pasting every setting exactly, the second image looked like this. Obviously these are two very different looks, and I wouldn't deliver the second one, personally. But why do they look so different? Shouldn't everything look the same? Well, depending on how much light was entering the lens, what the settings on my camera were, what direction I was facing, and what part of Benjen you were seeing, even copying and pasting can produce drastically different results. I individually tweak every image to try to maintain consistency while still staying true to the scene. Some images will still never look the same as others, but I try my best to make each image look great in their own right.
Can you believe how two things can be identical, but so so different?

Do you know what would mean the world to me? If you would take a minute to write a review on my page or Google if you have not already. Reviews and engaging on posts are the best way that you can support small businesses in this time. I would love to catch up with and support past clients and see how you are doing and how you are coping, and hearing your feedback from your sessions and weddings would be icing on the cake!

Why Choose Mainstreet?

What you will find at Mainstreet Photography isn't department store studio photos with stiff poses in front of a background - the same background as everyone else for the past 50 years- leaving your photos looking the same as everyone else's for the past 50 years.

While I do offer mini sessions for client convenience and affordability, mini sessions marathons with an elaborate prop set up that’s used for dozens of clients in a row isn’t my style. My photography pet peeve is when a photographer somehow manages to take dozens of people and make their photos somehow identical. I prefer to take the time to get to know each client - laugh, talk, have fun - and break down any barriers and insecurities. That’s when the magic happens.

My sessions lean towards Lifestyle Photography, which is a more recently defined style of photography that that focuses on real-life and everyday situations. For this reason my full galleries tend to be extensive (and no that’s no a typo for expensive. I’m really talking more pictures for you to enjoy, not more money here)- I hate to pick one facial expression over another because I don’t know which you would prefer. Your session is all about you. Feel free to bring props. Video game controller? Harry Potter wand? The 4th Doctor’s scarf? Your pupper? If it’s an important part of what makes you you, bring it!

I'm here to capture memories, which means I don't want you to pretend to be something you're not in front of my lens. And while finding inspiration is great, MP recognizes that life isn't always Pinterest perfect. Most of the time it never is. Instead of trying to "Nail It" to create something modeled after someone else's "perfect life", I want to create something original that is uniquely you.

My wife Nelda and I wanted to have a personalized Christmas card this year to send out to friends and family. So we chose a photo that Brittany had made of our beloved basset hound Bogart in his Santa Claus garb at Christmas On the Square in Springfield. We contacted her and told her what we wanted and sure enough she designed a winner for us that will be memorable for years to come. To say we are pleased with her efforts and work would be a understatement and highly recommend Main Street Photography for all of your photography needs!
