One of the coolest things about traveling by water and not having a planned route, is that you stumble upon places that are off the beaten track and totally unexpected! Reedville Virginia was one of those places...we were going to anchor in the harbor, but I noticed a "Free Dock" at a restaurant in town, so we went on up the river several miles to check it out. It appealed to us because we would be able to get off the boat for a walk through this small fishing town. The restaurant wasn't open (it's in the process of being sold), but we saw there was an ice cream shop a block away, so we went for a walk & were blown away by all the well kept and historic (late 1800s) homes!
After we got ice cream, we walked the other way and found a local museum that was open & enjoyed a tour of the grounds. Shipbuilding and fishing were the focus, and it was well done and extensive for a small town! We expected bad weather the next day (Memorial Day), so we didn't leave until early afternoon. In the morning, we walked to a little Cafe about a mile away and got delicious breakfast sandwiches. A friendly local couple gave us a ride back on their golf cart. The weather cleared up so we continued on, but I wanted to share some of their homes and history!
