Summer Fling Loop Adventure

Summer Fling Loop Adventure Mona & Frank departed Au Gres MI late Sept, 2023 on "Summer Fling" for our Great Loop adventure! Now we're bringing Summer Fling home to Lake Huron...

We completed our first Loop in July, 2024, then left again that September for Florida.

A few more NYC photos...then we cruised on up the beautiful Hudson River to Half Moon Bay Marina in Croton on Hudson NY. From there we went to an anchorage in Athens because the town dock was full (2 boats lol). We took the mast down the next morning (we need to get under some low fixed bridges on the Erie Canal) and left for Waterford, just north of Albany, which is the entrance to the Erie Canal.

Cruising into NYC Harbor is one of my favorite things on the Loop! I'm not a "city person", but I ❤️ NY! We cruised on a bit of the NJ Intercoastal, then back in the Atlantic and were happy to have our buddy boat with us because they got some great shots of us in front of the Statue of Liberty, then behind it at our anchorage tonight!

Did you know the Statin Island Ferry runs 24 hours a day(& it's free!?) Every half hour...2 of them. Which makes almost constant rollers for us here 😳...but totally worth it!! They will rock us to sleep!

Moving right along...and then sitting...and then moving a little bit...From Delaware City we went down Delaware Bay to Cape May at the southern tip of New Jersey on Friday. Very windy on Saturday but planned to leave early Sunday and make it halfway up the coast of NJ on the "outside" (in the Atlantic because the NJ Intercoastal is very shallow), but a small craft advisory went into effect late Saturday for Sunday, so we held off. Other boats left & we heard back that it wasn't bad, so we left late morning & went to an anchorage not as far as we planned...Monday (how is it June already??!?!?) We planned to have a long day, but Mother Nature kicked up strong afternoon wind, so we stopped where we'd originally planned to be Sunday...oh well! Maybe we'll get to NYC tomorrow!!

The sun finally came out after a week of clouds, rain and fog! After leaving Reedville we continued north into Maryland and it wasn't great weather...upper 60s, low 70s and very humid, but the fog is not fun. We had maybe 1/4 mile visibility and ran with our lights on, but couldn't see any sights.

We stopped at a protected anchorage near Annapolis to wait out thunderstorms, then continued north and the sun finally came out!!

One of the coolest things about traveling by water and not having a planned route, is that you stumble upon places that are off the beaten track and totally unexpected! Reedville Virginia was one of those places...we were going to anchor in the harbor, but I noticed a "Free Dock" at a restaurant in town, so we went on up the river several miles to check it out. It appealed to us because we would be able to get off the boat for a walk through this small fishing town. The restaurant wasn't open (it's in the process of being sold), but we saw there was an ice cream shop a block away, so we went for a walk & were blown away by all the well kept and historic (late 1800s) homes!

After we got ice cream, we walked the other way and found a local museum that was open & enjoyed a tour of the grounds. Shipbuilding and fishing were the focus, and it was well done and extensive for a small town! We expected bad weather the next day (Memorial Day), so we didn't leave until early afternoon. In the morning, we walked to a little Cafe about a mile away and got delicious breakfast sandwiches. A friendly local couple gave us a ride back on their golf cart. The weather cleared up so we continued on, but I wanted to share some of their homes and history!

We're in the Chesapeake Bay! Currently (Friday) waiting out windy weather. Cooler now too, thankfully. We anchored along the way through North Carolina to Belhaven, where we met quite a few Loopers. We had good (but HOT 95) weather so we crossed the Abermarle Sound to Elizabeth City, then crossed the Great Dismal Swamp the next day, into Virginia. Weather continued to be hot, but the wind was southerly so we passed through Portsmouth and Norfolk and into Chesapeake Bay. We arrived at Wormly Creek Marina Wednesday to plug in and refill some prescriptions but the weather changed, so we ended up staying 3 nights. Weather permitting, we'll be in Delaware in a few days!

We've been having a blast! Mother's Day at Myrtle Beach was a special treat because we got to visit Susan Lang & Don while friends from home were there: it was also Barbara Beroske 's Birthday, Joyce Miller & Oddlyn Stapleton. Nice afternoon hanging out & having dinner together ❤️!

Then on to Southport NC after a stop in Holden Beach to have a battery issue taken care of. Porch Tales at Robert & Kay's with 2 other Looper couples. Wednesday we continued to Carolina Beach to await a software upgrade from Garmin (our chart plotter) which shipped to my cousins at Kure Beach, Pam & Xavier Brodbeck and Patricia Eaton. So good to see them (& Molly Tuttle with her newborn son!! 😍) They chauffeured us around & we enjoyed visiting with them!

Our order finally arrived Friday, so we left Saturday morning, heading north to Moorehead City then Belhaven, NC, where we visited with some Loopers we'd met before & a couple on a Grand Banks 42 (like ours!), who will travel with us the next few days.

Facebook is so annoying! I saved the post (to avoid losing it 🙄) & went back to "Edit" & add captions & it won't let me!! I can't access the caption space below the pictures 🥴 So I'll try again...

We left Punta Gorda early Tuesday morning and cruised to Ft Myers Beach, where we've gotten a mooring ball twice before. Short dinghy ride and walked to the beach, which has recovered, but the pier is still destroyed (I believe from Ian in 2022, but could've been Milton). The next morning we left early to time arrival at Everglades Isle with high tide. We settled into our slip and borrowed a car to go to Havana Cafe on Chokoloskee Island, about 5 miles away. Friday Frank enjoyed his birthday with some fishing and an impromptu party at the Tiki Bar with a cake (thanks Julie!)

We started our (car) trip home Saturday (thanks again for your hospitality Ray N Annette Wensink ), stopping in Demopolis at Kingfisher Bay Marina to pick up the car. Another long day Monday to get back to Swanton in time for Thanksgiving and THE football game on Saturday! GO BLUE!! 💙💛
