How do you know when it is time to change your oil?
One of the most important things you can do for your vehicle is to keep your oil clean. Engine oil is used to lubricate the moving parts inside the engine. Viscosity is the measurement of this lubrication that prevents friction. Over time, engine oil loses viscosity and breaks down. This weakens the ability to protect those precious engine parts. Keep up on regular oil change maintenance to protect from unnecessary wear.
How do you check the oil?
The first step is to ensure the oil level is at a proper capacity. Having the oil either overfilled or underfilled can result in engine damage. In order to check this level, you first must locate the oil dipstick. Most vehicles, the dipstick will be located on the side of the engine and be either yellow or orange. With the vehicle on level ground and after sitting for five minutes, pull the dipstick out. The first time you pull it, you will want to wipe it off with a rag or paper towel. Then dip it back in and pull it out once more. This time you will be able to check the level properly. The oil level should be between two marks on the metal stick. Oil at the correct level should be between those two marks. If the oil level is below that mark, between the bottom mark and the tip of the dipstick, you need to add oil.
Why is my level low?
It is not unusual for a vehicle to use up or burn oil between your changes. As long as you are not noticing oil spots in the driveway and the oil consumption is no more a quart or two between changes, you will be okay with adding oil here and there. If there are leaks or consumption is high, you will want to visit a mechanic.
How do you know the condition of the oil?
The condition and color of the oil are indicative of the remaining life of your oil. For most vehicles, the oil will begin at a golden/amber color and over time with wear turn to a darker brown or black. Does the color of the oil look darker than it does light? Is it black or chunky? These are signs you are due for an oil change.
