I removed this jewel from an 84 Caddy. I did a little research and the product claims a 50hp gain and 10mpg increase in efficiency . Just wire it into the IAC and walla. Whoever installed this “snake oil” didn’t know the difference between a IAC and a muffler bearing. It was wired to the coolant temp sensor which melted wires and nearly burned up a classic Elvis car. No gain in hp or mpg was accomplished.
PSA- Just because the maker claims wonderful results on the internet doesn’t mean it is true. Leave the snake oil alone and go to a trusted mechanic for performance upgrades. The car you save may be your own. Happy Motoring!

15 New Cars To Avoid

No surprise that Jeep made the list 3 times.

New cars just aren’t what they used to be. No, we’re not getting all crotchety and decrying the evolution in styling and technological breakthroughs that have literally reinvented the automobile during the last quarter millennium. Rather, we’re bemoaning the fact that, unlike as in past model years,

Every week we get at least 1 car in that had been already repaired, but is still broke. Last week I towed in a couple from local shade trees. Did the owners save money dealing with the local shade tree mechanic? Their transportation was tied up while someone guessed what might be wrong. They purchased non-returnable sensors and paid to have them installed. Then they paid a tow bill to send it to a qualified shop.

We understand that money is tight for people and we try to offer them options to get their transportation back on the road while saving them money. Usually diagnosing the real problem correctly does just that. We don't just swap sensors and parts. We test them with precision equipment and replace them only if they are truly bad.

If you have a car/truck problem, give us a call. We WILL get you back on the road for a reasonable price!

All auto manufacturers from time to time have sold the consumers a not so better idea. The Ford 3 valve engine has a spark plug design that falls in that category. The problem is that the plug has a long tubular steel ground wrapped around the center electrode. The design allows the sparkplug to extend through the cylinder head and positions it near the center of the combustion area.

When you attempt to remove the spark plug, corrosion on the outer portion of the ground electrode and carbon buildup between the plug and head will bind the plug. Even if you are extremely careful while loosening the plug, you will most certainly break off the outer ground electrode where it joins the upper part of the spark plug, at least on a few, if not all. The busted metal tip of the spark plug and center electrode remain in the head when the top of the plug comes out.

Many Ford dealerships are scared to death to change the spark plugs on these vehicles because they know the risk of breakage is so high — and they are charging their customers a small fortune (up to $1,000 or more!) when they break the plugs because of the time and effort it often takes to make the repairs.

At Rockmart Automotive we have developed a procedure that works very well to remove these spark plugs. We still experience occasional break offs, but our tried and tested methods of removal greatly reduce the risk of break offs and save our customers considerable money.

The number 1 thing that an owner of one of the affected vehicles can do is have these plugs changed well before the recommended 100,000 mi.

Below is a partial list of the vehicles with this type of plug. They are all in the 3 valve platform:

2005-2008 Mustangs, 2006-2008 Explorers and Mountaineers and 2007-2008 Sport Tracs, all with the 4.6L 3V engine.

2004-2008 Ford Pickups and Expeditions with the 5.4L 3V Triton engine.

If you have any of these vehicles, don't wait for the scheduled service interval. Call Rockmart Automotive today. We will professionally remove those problem plugs and renew them with new updated design plugs.

The Firestone recall in the late 1990s (which was linked to more than 100 deaths from rollovers following tire tread separation), pushed the United States Congress to legislate the TREAD Act. The act mandated the use of a suitable TPMS technology in all light motor vehicles (under 10,000 pounds), to alert drivers of under inflation events. All light motor vehicles manufactured after September 1, 2007 for sale in the United States have these systems installed, although phase in began in 2005 year models.

The dynamic behavior of a pneumatic tire is closely connected to its inflation pressure. Key factors like braking distance and lateral stability requires the inflation pressures to be adjusted and kept as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Extreme under inflation can lead to thermal and mechanical overload caused by overheating and subsequent, sudden destruction of the tire itself. Additionally, fuel efficiency and tire wear are severely affected by under inflation. Tires do not only leak air if punctured, they also leak air naturally, and over a year, even a typical new, properly mounted tire can lose 3-9 psi, roughly 10% or more of its initial pressure.

The significant advantages of TPMS are as follows:

Fuel Savings: for every 10% of under inflation on each tire on a vehicle, a 1% reduction in fuel economy will occur. In the United States alone, the Department of Transportation estimates that under inflated tires waste 2 billion US gallons of fuel each year.

Extended Tire Life: under inflated tires are the #1 cause of tire failure and contribute to tire disintegration, heat buildup, ply separation and sidewall breakdown.

Decreased downtime and maintenance: under inflated tires lead to costly hours of downtime and maintenance.

Improved Safety: under inflated tires lead to tread separation and tire failure, resulting in 40,000 accidents, 33,000 injuries and over 650 deaths per year. Further, tires properly inflated add greater stability, handling and braking efficiencies and provide greater safety for the driver, the vehicle and others on the road.

TPMS a systems utilize sensors in each tire of your vehicle. These sensors require some maintenance. They are a sealed units with a battery life of 3 to 5 years in most cases, depending on drive times. If tires are rotated the sensors have to be relearned to the vehicle in their new positions.

If your vehicle is TPMS equipped and the dash indicator light is on steady it is telling you that you have a tire that has lost at least 25% of its required inflation pressure. If the light is flashing it is indicating that system is setting a trouble code, probably due to sensor failure.

If your TPMS a indicator is on, immediately check your tire pressure. Once properly inflated, if the indicator continues to illuminate, bring it to the shop for a health inspection.

A few weeks ago I wrote about brakes. When it comes to safety, brakes are at the top of the list! With school starting back and colder months ahead, August is the perfect time to have those brakes inspected to make sure they are in safe working condition.

Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they’re going to need to be replaced. For routine maintenance, check your vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test drive to detect other potential brake system problems.

If your car is pulling to the left or right, or if you hear odd noises when you apply the brakes, you should inspect your brakes. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grabbing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing.

Several factors that affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. Never put off routine brake inspections or any needed repair, such as letting the brakes get to the “metal-to-metal” point, which can be potentially dangerous and lead to a more costly repair bill.

A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle operation and control under a variety of driving conditions. Motorists can put a stop to any potential brake system problems by recognizing the signs and symptoms that their brake system may need maintenance or repair.

Rockmart Automotive and Towing offers a free brake inspection. We check not only the pads, but the entire system. Give us a call today at 678 757-6029. Your safety is our concern!

Many automobiles and trucks manufactured these days are overhead cam design. These cars have belts which drive the camshafts. As the belts age they deteriorate, stretch or break. Often times this results in catastrophic internal engine damage! Manufacturers recommendations on when to change the timing belt varies from 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Ignoring this service requirement WILL eventually cost the vehicle owner substantially more money.

Give us a call at Rockmart Automotive and Towing if you are unsure if your car has a timing belt, to get a quote and to schedule an appointment to renew the timing belt.

Are your brakes squealing like little pigs? This is not necessarily a bad thing. Brake pads are manufactured with wear indicators to let you know you're getting close to the time they need to be replaced. This is the time to call and schedule brake service.

Auto manufacturers install vibration absorbing plates between the brake pads and the caliper pistons. All to often these parts are left out when brake pads are changed. This is often the source of noisy squealing brakes. A quality brake job includes replacing these parts. We use top quality brake pads and parts.

If your brakes are making grinding or vibrating noises, you likely have bigger problems. The longer you drive your vehicle with brake issues, the more costly the repair will be. Call us today and we will ensure your vehicle is safe and roadworthy!

Do you drive a 1996 or newer car or light truck? If so, it is equipped with OBD—an advanced "on-board" computer system responsible for monitoring your vehicle's engine, transmission, and emissions control components. If your "Check Engine" light comes on and stays on, your OBD system is telling you that it has detected a problem with your vehicle. In addition to protecting the environment, this light, and the OBD system behind it, can save you time and money by identifying minor problems before they become major repair bills.

Does your car have a check engine light that is staying on? Give us a call at 678 757-6029 for a free diagnostic scan.
