Name a better love story than Twilight, you say?

Easy enough: may we present Vincent Loving’s passion for trust, community, and automobiles, the latter of which started under the hood of his parents’ vehicle many moons ago. It was an interest sparked by love and support. “My parents couldn’t afford regular maintenance on their car when I was growing up,” he said. “I wanted to be the one to contribute and help out.”

That’s love.

The automotive industry ever since has been a calling for Vincent, who, as of June 10, 2023, celebrated 37 years with our Company.

For Vincent, the years have been filled with challenges that are indicative of his growth in character, even outside of car repairs. Take two years ago, when a blood clot in his lung prevented him from running in the annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. “Those were tough times, not just for me, but for my family, too,” he recalled. “I’ve been running [in the marathon] for 20 years.”

Vincent powered through his recovery and plans to participate in the marathon this October through positivity, incredible medical care, love from his family, and faith.

That’s trust.

“I think a lot about the number of times I could have given up,” he said. “But, you know, you’ve got to keep making it happen. There are people out there who value me.”

“I’ve worked hard over the years to build trust in my community. To get to know those who work in advertising, the law, and medicine, all of whom come into my Store because they need me to get them back on the road. To make a difference in their lives.”

That’s community.

Nowadays, Vincent has just the right amount to think about: his wife, his daughter, who earned a scholarship to play D1 college basketball at her local university, and his continued passion and curiosity for the world that exists within a vehicle.

“I still think about time and how grateful I am to have received positive influence from many people over the years,” he said. “Some are still here, some are gone.”

One day, you’ll blink your eyes, and something like 37 years will pass you by.

Luckily for Vincent, he’s absolutely made the most of it.

David Lannom's first car, a 1965 Ford Falcon, did not work. According to Dave, it just needed an opportunity. So Dave came along, fixed her up, and gave her 10 more years of life. That was the spark.

Dave then served his country in the United States Army and came out with a need for work. Fortunately, he didn’t need to look any further than the automotive industry.

It’s the 1980s, a decade that saw the continuing emergence of consumer electronics. “Did we ever think there would be a computer in your car?” David asked. “I would’ve laughed at you back in the day, but coming out of the service, I realized that it was the future of the automotive industry. I needed to combine my education with vehicles in a fast-changing, week-to-week evolving industry—a trait of the industry itself that still lasts to this day.”

For David, it’s not 35 years in the automotive industry; it’s 35 years of continuing education in the automotive industry. The proof is on his office walls, where you’ll find the 40 ASE certifications he’s earned throughout the years, including his World Class recognition from The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), an honor that only 2,500 technicians have earned since 1986 and only 54 technicians achieved in 2023.

The continuing evolution of automobiles pulled him back out of retirement two years ago, when he joined Monro as a Field Training Manager. Now, this role keeps him coming back for more, which enables him to pass down his know-how to the next generation and provide training, something he feels can and should be more accessible for all.

“I’ll never forget a young man who was once my student many years ago,” he said. “I asked him to read a section of text. He got up from his seat and said that he had to use the restroom. At the end of the day, he came back and told me never to ask him that again because he didn’t know how to read. I spent hours remediating him.

That same student is now making over $100k per year, knows how to read and write, and has since gotten married. Those types of learners, the ones we consider to be at the bottom of the barrel in our society, can be trained and mentored to have automobile expertise, and it can become a game-changer for them.”

To be fancy, let’s call it an aptitude for technical knowledge. Or, maybe in David’s case, let’s just call in an opportunity—the same kind of opportunity he gave to his 1965 Ford Falcon when others had given up on it.

“If I ever lose my sense of self as an educator, I will have lost my soul.”

Do you recognize former NFL linebacker Steve Broutman?

No, you don’t—not because you don’t recognize Steve, but because he wasn’t an NFL linebacker. Instead, by the skin of his teeth, he decided to pick a career in the automotive industry.

Back in the 80s, when the hair was big and the gas prices were low, Steve’s mother was very concerned about his future. Like many high school boys, he thought that he was destined for a career in professional football and would one morning roll out of bed and fall into a million-dollar contract.

“That fantasy didn’t last too long,” Steve recalled. “One day, I was getting ready to leave to hang out with my friends until my mother told me firmly to sit down. She had this thick coursebook from high school that outlined different trade professions and job outlooks, like what today’s younger crowd would get from the Better Business Bureau.”

His mother wanted him to pick something more realistic, not just for her own peace of mind, but for his future, too. Steve, being the attentive 16-year-old boy he once was, randomly flipped to one of the first pages, a page titled “Automotive,” placed his finger on it, looked up to his mother, and said, “A – Automotive,” before leaving the house.

The next day at school, Steve was enrolled in an automotive program. And for 37 years, since March 1986, the industry and everything it encompasses have been his bread and butter. As a technician, assistant manager, Store Manager, District Manager, financial auditor, and trainer extraordinaire, he has touched almost every aspect that our Company has to offer.

For Steve, however, different hats have not changed the core of who he is. In fact, his brand and identity continue to remain consistent. “I rely on integrity and trust,” he said. “Not just trust in other people or different things, but trust in myself to fulfill my duties and do the right thing, especially when it comes to helping others.”

So maybe Steve isn’t the NFL linebacker he was hoping to be. But waking up for 37 years in the automotive industry and getting to do what he loves and make a difference in people’s lives isn’t too bad an alternative.

05/30/2023

Paul Sullivan was once a 26-year-old, wide-eyed young man working as a retail store manager. It was a particularly stressful day when he was at his desk smoking a cigarette. He looked up from his work when his sales representative appeared with a wide grin. “That’s a nasty habit!” he said. “The stress of management isn’t for everyone; you may live longer as a salesman.”

“The ironic part,” said Paul. “Is that he walked into the room with chewing to***co in his mouth.”

Fast forward to May 30, 2023, and Paul will be celebrating 35 years with our company in commercial sales. Those years have been filled with collaborating with different people, solving a diverse set of problems, and making many friends along the way. Sales and the automotive industry have been the perfect marriage for Paul, who notes that the industry has a way of getting under your fingernails. “This industry, in every single form, needs people with a deep knowledge of it who also don’t mind the hard work and grime,” he said. “But this all stems from the love of the industry itself and the people that are in it.”

The industry needs personality, too, especially in sales. Thankfully for Paul, his contagious laughter and people-first approach have been valued and admired by his allies, Teammates, and family, the latter of which he continually uses to find his motivation. Each morning, his wife turns over in bed and tells him to “Get out of bed, money… I mean, honey,” at least according to Paul.

“But, really, it’s our ability to be happy and not take ourselves too seriously,” he said. “I keep myself grounded by understanding the power of faith and all of life’s possibilities.”

“And, yes, smoking is a nasty habit.”

Today, we honor the fallen and pause to reflect on those who sacrificed for our individual freedoms and protected our nation’s values.

“We must remember that the price of freedom is not free,” said Mike Broderick, President and CEO. “We are eternally grateful to those who have selflessly and heroically given their lives to serve the country that we call home.”

For 38 years, William Arena has been working on vehicles of all makes and models at Store 510 in Hartford, Connecticut. “And I could do it for another 38 years if my body would allow me,” William said.

It’s this trait that his Teammates usually highlight first: his loyalty. His loyalty to his work, his people, and himself. In fact, William is so dedicated to his craft that he often sleeps overnight at Store 510, at least according to the joke that is shared amongst him and his Teammates.

His undying loyalty and passion stem from a love he learned in his parents’ vintage garage, repairing the vehicles of years past with his father and stepbrother. The classics.

Today, he’ll get out of bed and immediately feel grateful to be alive for another day. “That’s the first step for me, always,” he said. “After that, it’s being patient and remaining curious about everything, especially cars.”

On May 28, 2023, William will celebrate 38 years at Monro. On Day 1 of his career, cars represented a whole world and a journey that deserved to be explored. When he goes to bed at the end of Day 13,879, cars will still represent the same thing.

The importance of giving back to the community you call home. A pair of our Teams were active during United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes Day of Caring!

Our Internal Audit and Loss Prevention Team volunteered with the Market View Heights Collective Action Project “waking” the community garden—preparing beds, weeding, and mulching. The effort directly benefits the Project, which, last year, produced over 2,000 pounds of food that was donated to local food pantries and residents.

Members of our Information Technology and Facilities Teams visited the Wood Library in Canandaigua, NY, to arrange thousands of books on their shelves and sort through the books that will be a part of the library’s book sale this year.

Our commitment to the environment is year-round, whether it’s making small changes at an individual level or collaborating to prioritize large-scale shifts.

In partnership with our friends at Safety-Kleen, Monro has avoided 7,565 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions through our oil recycling process from March 2022 to March 2023, which equivalates to around 851,000 gallons of gasoline, 17,500 barrels of oil, and 2,500 tons of landfill waste and emissions from around 19 million vehicles.

Reducing Paper and Saving Trees

We are committed to reducing our paper usage, and what better time to launch our new Store Paperwork Reduction initiative than in April during Earth Month!

All 1,300 Stores are now transmitting documents electronically to our Store Support Center instead of sending via U.S. Mail. This project will eliminate more than 10 million sheets of paper from our internal workflow in the coming year. This is equivalent to 47 tons of paper and 1,120 trees saved, yielding huge benefits for our operating efficiencies and a big win for the environment!

The Light of Our Stores

LEDs are the future of energy-efficient technology in our country. On average, LEDs last longer, create less heat, and use less energy than incandescent lighting.

With these benefits in mind, our goal is to convert all our Stores to 100% LED lighting by fiscal year 2028. To date, we have 293 Stores lit by LEDs, a growth of 7% from the end of the last fiscal year.

It’s not just better business; it’s our future.
