1969 Chevrolet Camaro - Blown Bandit

Eric Gustafson’s Supercharged 8.5 Outlaw
From the December, 2012 issue of Chevy High Performance
By Jake Amatisto

You could say heads-up racer Eric Gustafson came from nowhere when he entered his supercharged ’69 Camaro in the Street Car Super Nationals VII in Las Vegas for the first time last year. Despite being untested on the Outlaw 8.5 class-mandated 26x

8.5 slicks, Eric proceeded to qualify Second in this eighth-mile category with a 5.41 (mid 8s in the quarter-mile), get to the final round with some admitted luck, and take down the number-one qualifier with a superb 0.023 reaction. No one saw it coming, and since it’s not too often a heads-up rookie drops jaws like that, many fans thought it to be a fluke. “We had only tested the car on 28x10.5 slicks before,” Eric says, “so we didn’t know what to expect in Vegas. We wanted to win, of course; we just didn’t think we would with our limited data.”

Over the following months, the rush of driving a stock suspension car that could accelerate to 135 mph in 5 seconds and the rush of winning a National event fueled Eric’s competitive spirit and he craved getting back into competition. At his third event, the West Coast Hot Rod Association’s second meet of 2012, the Hermosa Beach, California, resident was on track to the finals again, taking out the number-one qualifier and getting past two rounds before bowing out due to a heart-shattering red light reaction. His passion for competition made Eric stew about his self-inflicted loss for the weeks leading up to the National Muscle Car Association’s first event, where he’d get a chance to redeem his early leave. “I felt like I let down my crew, so I really wanted to win the first NMCA West race to make it up to them, as well as myself.”

We caught up with the Camaro driver during said event in Bakersfield right after he qualified Third for Outlaw 8.5, just a day before he set the e.t. and mph records (5.39 at 135 mph) and won all the marbles. Judging by this ride’s performances in less than a year, we’d speculate the naysayers from his Vegas win are singing a different tune by now, as he currently sits in the points lead for the NMCA’s Outlaw 8.5 class. However, don’t get used to seeing Eric’s ’69 in the Outlaw 8.5 ranks after this year; Eric explains, “I am floored by how well the car has done thanks to my great crew, Theo Dec at Wizard Racing, and supportive family. But, this was primarily a street build, so I plan to retire it back to the street by next year.” The LS-powered ’69 may not be racing in heads-up classes in the future, but after picking up on the hints of another race car in the works from the Eric camp, we’d say you haven’t seen the last of them; just consider yourself warned. “I’m not going to reveal much, let’s just say we do plan on stepping up,” Eric says. Eric’s drive for horsepower is in his blood. His grandfather was a founding member of the SCTA. His father, Ron, campaigned an alky dragster with NHRA in the ’60s and still has an active role in Eric’s racing program today. “He’s the mechanical one, I’ve always just been fascinated with horsepower and driving fast vehicles, whether it’s cars or whatever represents power. He’s a great racing partner and my best friend, I couldn’t do this without him,” Eric says. Eric also thanked his wife, Courtney, his employees at Coast Packing in Vernon, Theo Dec at Wizard Racing for building and tuning the car, Chris Alston Jr. at Chris Alston’s Chassisworks, Dave Werremeyer at ProCharger, his engine builder Kurt Urban, and his crew Bobby Canova, Eric “Big E” Broward, and “Lil” Jon McGovern. We asked Eric if he had any tips for future generations of heads-up racers or for those who are about to start heads-up racing; his advice was pretty insightful. He said, “You can’t let yourself get discouraged if the race doesn’t go your way. It’s hard to pick yourself back up sometimes, but if you want to be competitive, you must. Also, we like to always leave the track, win or lose, with ideas to improve the car in testing between races. Another one is, if the car gets out of shape, don’t be a cowboy and try to manhandle it; a round win is not worth wrecking the car.” We tend to agree; wise words to drag race by. Finally grabbed that elusive PDRA Racing Pro Boost race win at Summit Motorsports Park last weekend!

For the past couple seasons a win at PDRA has eluded us in many different ways so much that we called it the amongst the team. This past weekend everything came together in the most competitive field of Pro Boost cars to date and we were able to come out on top for our first PDRA 660 man trophy!

Jason Lee of PTPRacing did a phenomenal job driving and tuning the Coast Packing Co. Lard Machine while the hardworking team kept the car happy between rounds. The finals were decided by .0013 seconds with us running 3.65 to Randy Weatherford's 3.67.

Next race is in 3 weeks where we'll be at Maryland International Raceway for the 4th stop of the PDRA tour. See everyone there!

Thank you to the following for making all this possible:

Huge win last weekend at the Yellowbullet Nationals!

With Jason Lee driving and tuning the Coast Packing Co. Camaro in Pro Mod, we were able to secure the win over a packed field of Pro nitrous and Pro Boost cars qualifying 2nd out of 20 cars with a 3.594 @209 mph, the first time in the 3.50's on the big tires for the car, and going 3.595 @ 210mph with a .003 reaction time in the final over the Decker Family. What a great final round with the MOV of .020 seconds at the finish line.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors, family, and friends for all the help and support and we look forward to continuing a great 2021 with more success on the racetrack!

The baddest radial car in the world!!! FACT

We did it! Won one of the biggest baddest races in the world Duck X Productions Lights Out 12!

Had a dominating weekend setting the World Record, qualifying #1, low ET every round and won the race.

Our team worked hard all week and really showed the world that we are here to compete and will be a team to beat moving forward.
The Coast Packing Co. R&E Racing Lard machine really showed out with Jason Lee of PTPRacing driving like a mad man and destroying the tree every round while tuning the beast to consistent 3.50 runs every time down the race track.

Noonan Race Engineering ProCharger Superchargers horsepower propelled this car to consistent laps every time down the race track and Tim Lyons and boys at Lyons Custom Motorsports made sure the car was working good every run.

Finally, huge shoutout to Nicole Liberty-Cach of Liberty's Gears for rebuilding our transmission for the finals and making sure that we were ready to go. Thank you!

So many people to thank for this amazing weekend. Thank you all for what you do!

First time on radials was a huge success! We ended up going to the finals and came up a little short to Birt at No Mercy 11 and the week of Duck! Duck X Productions

Went 3.571 205 on our 14th pass ever on radials and took out the baddest small block car in the semis on a huge holeshot. Jason Lee is a madman behind the wheel and keyboard tuning this thing up.

We went to Georgia with 0 runs ever on radials and made lap after lap going quicker and faster. The boys at Lyons Custom Motorsports Tim Lyons got the car set up perfectly and didn’t need a suspension adjustment all weekend.
893 sixty foot! Along with living in the .90x sixty foot range all week.

We’re back in promod trim in just 2 days turnaround and headed to the PDRA Racing finals as we speak to finish the big tire season off strong Tyler Crossnoe

Wish us luck!

2nd NMCA Xtreme Promod win of the season!

Picked up the win this weekend at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mi. We had to get past some good competition and ran a 3.70 203mph in the final to beat Adam Flamholc. This pushes our championship points lead to 270 points heading into the final race of the year in Indy next month. That's 3 out of 4 NMCA finals and 2 wins!

This isn't possible without so much help from all of the following, thank you all for your time and effort to make our program better and better!

#1 after round 1 of qualifying. Thank you NMCA for the coverage. Let’s go get it in round 2!

VP Racing Fuels/Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod powerhouse Eric Gustafson gunned to a 3.73 to set the pace in the first round of qualifying today at the Nitto Tire USA NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by HPJ Performance at World Wide Technology Raceway in his Coast Packing Co. Camaro powered by a Noonan Hemi and a ProCharger F-3X-140. When we asked whether it was smooth sailing to those nice numbers, he said “So far, so good.” Then when we asked if he thinks there’s more where that came from, he smiled before saying “You know us. We’ll push it if the track allows.” That means fans should keep an eye on the California-based driver and his crew, consisting of Cam Hensley, John Urgo and tuners Jason Lee and Patrick Barnhill of PTPRacing, during the second round of qualifying later today.
