All music is local — and its future depends on what we choose to protect.

In his recent TEDxCUNY Talk, “All Music Is Local,” Rev. Moose — NIVA’s Founding Executive Director (’20–22) — draws on the story of NIVA and to show why independent venues and the broader local music ecosystem matter. They create the conditions for artists to be discovered, new voices to be heard, and communities to define their own culture.

His message is a powerful one: Supporting independent music is an act of civic engagement — and the work is far from finished.

March 27, 1952 — The Birth of Sun Records
On this day in 1952, Sun Records of Memphis, Tennessee began releasing records — quietly opening the door to what would soon become the sound of a musical revolution.
Founded by Sam Phillips, the tiny studio at 706 Union Avenue would soon become the starting point for legends like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison.
Before rockabilly had a name…
before rock ’n’ roll conquered the world…
there was Sun Records ☀️
A small studio.
A bold vision.
A historic sound that changed music forever.
Which Sun Records artist do you think best captured the true spirit of the label? 🎸
