PROTEST U.S. WAR ON IRAN. Tuesday, June 2, 4 PM in Providence
Stand with the RI Anti-War Committee to demand that the U.S. end its war on Iran. Let Cuba live. End the oil embargo. Call for a halt to U.S. aid to Israel and instead, provide sufficient humanitarian aid for the Palestinians. Stop all U.S. military incursions around the world. We meet every Tuesday and Friday at 4 PM at the intersection of Francis and Gaspee Streets across from the Providence Place Mall. Bring friends, signs and banners. China’s Gain in Biotech Raises Alarm. This is the headline from a recent NYT article. A reader could be forgiven for thinking China has developed a new biological weapon that will soon be released on innocent Americans. But no, the article is actually about China’s rapidly developing biotechnology industry. The threat referred to is actually to the dominance of American companies in the biotechnology field. Once lagging far behind in the development of new drugs, China is now a powerhouse in creating and testing cutting-edge medicines. U.S. officials and pharmaceutical executives are concerned that America will lose its position as the leader in biotechnical development. U.S. biotech companies say that they are having trouble keeping up with Chinese companies’ rates of producing research papers, patents on new drugs and clinical trials. Thus, it is not a concern about the health of the American people, but a worry about maintaining the huge profits of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry.
Once again, we see China overtaking the U.S. in an important economic sector. They have achieved a lead in the fields of renewable energy and now seem ready to do the same in biotechnology. The Trump administration continues its strategy of trying to dominant China and curtail its development. It doesn’t seem to be working. Trump may want to reconsider his attacks on and suppression of universities and scientific research.
