Bare metal rusts on its own given enough moisture and oxygen. What Maine roads do is pour an accelerant on that process every time it snows or they pre-treat for a storm. A vehicle that might take 20 years to show serious corrosion in a dry climate can show it in 7 or 8 here.

That's why timing matters. The less bare metal exists when salt season starts, the slower everything moves.
