September Flavors - Halibut and Lobster
Enchiladas (Local halibut and wild lobster mushrooms that is!)

Our onions, peppers, and tomatoes for this meal were even home grown!

Halibut Season should be open through the end of the month and coho fishing continues into early October. Those harvest opportunities combined with the flat water and lighter boat traffic typically seen in September offer a good chance at some end of the season fun!

Peaceful Sunday evening collecting one of our rental boats from Lake Sutherland!
We're looking forward to squeezing in a few kokanee trips in the next month or so as things settle down, projects get finished, and the water starts to cool.

August Mackerel - Love em or Hate em?

Plenty of folks seem to despise these "good fer nuthin' - taste like garbage - the cat won't even touch em - worthless - only good for bait" - fish.

While they don't really put up a fight when you hook them, we've taken delight in adding a few to our icy cold fish box every year they show up.

Turning them into decent tablefare can be a fussy endeavor, but if you do it "right" they can actually be quite delicious.

A few things we've found to be key:
▪︎ Bonk, bleed, and ice immediately
▪︎ Skin the fillets, cut out the pinbone line (center of fillet), and carefully trim off the dark meat/bloodline/fat
▪︎ Cook small pieces hot and fast. Instead of trying to do a whole fillet, try searing or blackening smaller strips (sea salt and butter in a skillet leaving the fish a little rare on the inside is pretty good).
▪︎ Try making ceviche. Cured overnight in a medley of lime, cilantro, peppers, onion, tomato, black pepper, and sea salt - this rubbish fish might actually bend your mind!

7/27/26 Orcas just spotted near Elwha Reservation.
They were East bound hunting along the shoreline. Keep an eye out if you happen to be out at Ediz Hook this evening!

Possible sea otter spotted off the East end of Ediz Hook near Port Angeles Saturday Morning (7/19/26)!

Did you know, sea otters eat about 25% of their body weight daily (up to 15–20 pounds of food)?

North American River otters are common around the Port Angeles Harbor, but we don't frequently see sea otters East of Clallam Bay. What identifying characteristics do you look for to determine which one you're looking at?Do you think this was a sea otter?

If so, what do you think it might be up to?

Starting this thread for page follwers who might be interested in making connections to go in on boat rentals with.

We recognize costs are high and that even assembling a crew to fish can sometimes be a challenge.

So if you'd like to book a boat but for some reason or other might not be able to pull it off on your own, feel free to drop a comment below stating who you are, where you live, and what your typical availability looks like. If people comment, you can try messaging each other from there to maybe put a trip together.

Lots of people end up in the same boat... wouldn't it be cool to literally end up in the same boat with somebody else for fun!
