Quarantine Bike Show DC #QBSDC

No B&B MD this Sunday, but time to show your bike anyway!

Thanks to the virus and social gathering restrictions in place, our regular Bikes and Breakfast MD event will not be taking place this Sunday (5/3). Next event date is TBD (hopefully two weeks). However, our good friends at Two For the Soul and DC Triumph have created a virtual bike show to keep us all connected! Check out the links and submit your video today! Contest ends 11:59 PM on May 2nd!

We’re introducing the Quarantine Bike Show – a virtual bike show where you can show off your bike on video and compete with other DC riders and builders.

Rain and sleet at 7:00 AM? Check. Lousy riding day? Not really! Great showing of riders today and as always, we started early and ran late. Good times and looking forward to better weather! Next B&B MD will be in three weeks on April 5th (when we were SUPPOSED to be in Austin TX for the Handbuilt Show and the MOTO GP). Might just see you next Sunday in Clifton!

THIS IS A TEST! Do you see this image as a snowflake and think it might mean it will be too cold to ride to Bikes and Breakfast in Poolesville tomorrow (Sunday 3/1)? Or do you see it as a motorcycle wheel that reminds you to break out your bike because it will be a chilly but beautiful day to ride? You decide! See you from 9-11 AM at the Watershed!

One of our regular Bikes and Breakfast attendees (and Marine Reserve), Logan Stommel, recently wrote a descriptive essay for the English class he's taking towards his Cyber Security degree. I think Logan perfectly captured the spirit and sense of community of the B&B series.

Thanks Logan, and Semper Fi!

Bikes & Breakfast
By Logan Stommel

Sundays, usually a day reserved for relishing in the warmth and comfort of remaining in bed, wrapped up in your sheets, well past when you would usually have to be awake. Sleeping in would be ideal, that is if I hadn’t somewhere to be. It was only 10 o’clock and I was already in Poolesville, Maryland. It was a stark suburban contrast to Alexandria, not a two-story building in sight. The air was brisk to the skin, couldn’t be more than about forty degrees, enough to cause goosebumps with a slight breeze. I was there for a Bikes and Breakfast motorcycle meet. Close to twenty motorcycles graced the damp, wet asphalt all in a uniform line.

The meet was more than an exhibition of motorcycles, but it was also a hub for all kinds of folks. Most of the riders had taken refuge inside the Watershed Café. They were trying to escape the biting cold so they could converse without the chattering of teeth. A rich, earthy, hot coffee and steaming fresh eggs served by a beautiful waitress with her golden hair in a ponytail was much more inviting than the light precipitation drizzling outside. The riders that were brave enough to remain outside huddled into groups. Many of the attendees were male, but of all different ages and sizes. You had older gentlemen attempting to utilize their phones to show off photos of their home projects. Simultaneously, the younger guys were sporting their beards with cigarettes in one hand, the other seeking the warmth of a coat pocket. The clothing was a mix between heavy, textile jackets favoring warmth and worn leathers favoring protection.

Each rider was apt to introduce themselves. A firm shake of the hand and a smile graced each introduction. Some hands were more weathered than others, the cracks and wrinkles like canyons in their skin. Each rider had a story to tell as evident by gesturing reminiscent of the ancient Greek philosophers. But this was our counsel, a mixture of experience and youth. The more gray and grizzled gentlemen not only tended to stick together but to stick by their Harley’s. You could see that in their later years, they’ve opted more for the comfort of being upright with a nice plush comfort seat whereas the younger riders have gone more towards the aggressive lines and positioning of a street bike. Most of the street bikes were naked: reminiscent of the motorcycles of the sixties and lacking the bodywork that would normally hide their engines, almost flaunting the inner workings. There was a sort of beauty in the simplicity of the naked bikes, a very pure unadulterated machine you could say.

The sounds of conversation were interspersed with the roar of motorcycles pulling in and out. The engines puttered as laughter was plentiful. I could hear the hellos and goodbyes as I watched folks wave to one another enthusiastically. I heard the turnover of one engine starting up to take their leave almost as if exchanging blows with the rumble of another Harley coming in. I was easily distracted by the whimpers and barks of a small labradoodle puppy that had been tied to the bike rack outside the café. I knelt to comfort the pup, petting his soft almost springy like fur, he was toasty and eager for affection. I could hear the jokes flying back and forth and complaints that the weather wasn’t at all like it had been forecasted. It was busy but comforting like how the background noise of the television can put you into a slumber.

The meet was very inviting. It brought upon a realization of how powerful a common interest could be. Motorcycles brought so many people together of different walks of life regardless of the weather. The riders don’t need to know one another in order to break bread, they already had common
ground. And that common ground is a culture. The riders’ shared world brings them together as a people: some wear textiles versus leather, some ride touring bikes versus cruisers, some value speed versus comfort, and some have been riding their whole lives versus just a few years. No matter what the background, if you were a rider you were one of us and we were delighted to see you.

A bunch of sturdy riders took the trek to Poolesville today despite temps in the 30's and mostly cloudy skies. Those that made it enjoyed some fine food, a bunch of laughs, and good conversation----MOST of it motorcycle related! Great to meet newcomers Santillon Geronimo (with his sweet Triumph Bobber) and Leonardo (on his bargain-steal-of-the-year Honda CB300). See you Sunday March 1st. Spring is right around the corner!

The first Bikes and Breakfast MD of the new year turned out to be a great day to catch up with old friends and make a few new ones as well with a great showing of bikes and riders (despite 30-something degree temps and winds). The coffee was hot and the breakfast sandwiches hit the spot! Next B&B MD will be Jan 19. See you at the Progressive Show in DC next weekend!

What's the problem with a little sleet, hard freezing rain, and 38 degree temps? Apparently no problem for Greg Huber who rode in to Poolesville from western Frederick County for Bikes and Breakfast MD this past Sunday on his Ducati. The rest of us stayed warm and enjoyed the fine Watershed Cafe cuisine once again. Greg just sent me a note saying he had just now warmed up (Monday night). See you on Sunday 12/15 for the next Bikes and Breakfast MD (plus the 3rd Sunday ride---weather permitting!).

Despite temps that never creeped over 40 degrees, a hearty group of bikers made it out to Bikes and Breakfast MD on Sunday for hot coffee and a great breakfast. On our "3rd Sunday Ride" a handful of riders took a nice loop out to the War Correspondents Memorial Arch at Gathland State Park and finished up with some terrific Kings Pizza in Brunswick. See you on December 1!

Does anyone know how Maryland's stay home order impacts motorcycle riding? Is it legal for me to go for a short ride, by myself, while following all social distancing rules? Or, does everyone need to stay off the road except for essential activities?
