Project 2002 ktm 250sx picked up for a decent price and rebuilt from the ground up combing through everything. Previous owner had the Cylinder redone, Cylinder was done incorrectly by a shop here in the valley (I won't name names) after all he did offer to fix it, but I just decided to do it myself. Every last nut and bolt checked thoroughly, had a few issues pop up here and there, but for the most part pretty straight forward. I hit everything that needed greased and lubricated, almost everything is brand new, on top of tons of aftermarket parts and extras. and she fired up first kick after rebuild and runs like a dream. I mean , it runs GREAT! and FAST as hell!....So much so, that I named her "Black Betty's child" and I haven't been able to part with it yet, and I don't know if I ever will. 😂

Tips I tell my customers to help keep small engines running. Focus on clean fuel (avoid ethanol, use stabilizer, the mower engines LOVE lead), regular oil changes with correct oil, clean air/fuel filters, and spark plug maintenance (clean/replace). Always keep the engine clean, check fluid levels before use, and follow seasonal storage procedures like draining fuel and adding stabilizer to prevent gumming and corrosion.

Fuel & Oil
Use Fresh, Ethanol-Free Fuel: Ethanol attracts water and degrades quickly; use fresh gas and consider ethanol-free fuel or a stabilizer to prevent carburetor issues.

Add Fuel Stabilizer: Especially for seasonal storage, stabilize fuel to prevent it from going stale and to combat water from ethanol. I personally avoid stabilizer in machines that get regular use, but for storage it is a MUST. (My preference)

Change Oil Regularly: Use the manufacturer's recommended oil (avoid automotive oil) and change it to prevent it from becoming thick and gummy.

Filters & Plugs
Air Filter: Inspect and clean or replace dirty, torn, or clogged paper filters; don't use compressed air on paper filters.
Fuel Filter: Inspect and clean or replace periodically (e.g., every 200 hours) to ensure good fuel flow.
Spark Plug: Inspect for corrosion or damage; clean with a wire brush or replace if worn or fouled.

Cleaning & Inspection
Keep it Clean: Regularly blow off debris from the engine, especially cooling fins, to prevent overheating.
Check Fasteners: Inspect for loose bolts and check hoses for cracks.
Inspect Fuel Strainer: Clean the strainer and sediment bowl monthly if needed.

Storage & Habits
Drain Fuel: For long-term storage, run the engine until it's dry or drain the fuel tank and carburetor bowl.
Use Proper Parts: Use OEM or equivalent filters, not cheaper automotive ones, as they're designed for different conditions.
Disconnect Spark Plug: Always disconnect the spark plug before working on the engine for safety.
