This model from Vincent’s exhibition in 2015 sits in our room as the meaning of monuments is being discussed in this country.
“This model portrays the ruins of Pennsylvania Hall built in 1838 by the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. It was burnt to the ground by an angry mob three days after its opening. The official city report blamed the fire and the riots on the abolitionist saying they had upset the citizens by the promotion of “race mixing”. It’s wreckage was left for years at the corner of 6th and the Race Streets as testimonial monument to the brutal acts of terrorism, which work to beat down and blunt the spearhead of the moment against slavery and racial inequality in 1830s Philadelphia.
