America’s First Automobile Race was held on Thanksgiving Day in 1895, hosted in Chicago.

6” of fresh snow, with windy 24” drifts, narrowed the field of 80 cars, down to 11 that agreed to race in the snow. Only 6 arrived at the starting line, and 2 finished.

The race route ran along Lake Michigan, the start/finish line was near the Museum of Science and Industry, running about 50 miles north roundtrip to Evanston. A portion of the original race route was also part of the Chicago NASCAR circuit this year.

The winner was an American homemade car built by the Duruea brothers. The other finisher was a Benz from Germany.

Other dates of interest:

Henry Ford built his first gas engine in 1893, and installed it into his first car the Quadricycle in 1896.

In 1902, the Marr Automobile began production in Elgin IL.

In 1895, then 9 year old Martin Skok emigrated to Chicago, and was fascinated the first time he saw a bicycle. Martin continued to work in the automotive industry, and in 1919 he founded Elgin Machine Works.

Today, two of Martin Skok’s grandsons still operate Elgin Industries in Elgin IL USA, and we proudly manufacture auto parts for nearly every car, truck, tractor, and power sports manufacturer.

Where o where do I start!!! Yes I went faster on old tires then DAD did on stickers!!!!!

So with the heat boiling we as in the division jacked around to long and lost our chance to qualify! The result of that was a very mixed up line up and I was able to drive my oh7 Colorado imaging -Accu blast-buckeye welding supply-dyno Pro-GTI golf cars powered hot rod to a land slide dash win! And with that I was able to get a deep in the field 14th starting spot for the main event! As the green flag flew I went to work picking of cars strategically one by one and with 10 laps or lest to go a car in front of me stuck a car head one into the fence and I was able to pick up two freebies there. The green flag flew once more and I was able to race and pass the #22 hill piloted , (clean driving) car on the top side and found my self in 3rd place tracking the leaders as the white flag flew the 8 car give the 32 a hard shot to the shorts going in to turn #1 moving him up the speedway giving him room to grind his paint off hitting my windshield down the back shoot as we go in to 3 little more door slamming 32 loses control smashed to turn 4 wall by missing the carnage I crossed the double checkers in 2nd place. Passing the most cars on the race track and doing it clean with the fastest lap time is a win for me and my team!!
