Estimated 1 of 5 cars ever produced
(1 of only 2 known documented examples)
We had the pleasure of performing preservation work on this special ordered, ultra rare, ultra cool 1968 Pontiac Catalina 428 HO 4spd. With just 16,710 original miles.
This Catalina is an exceptionally original automobile wearing its original paint, interior, tires, belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, assembly line decals and so on. The Catalina will be on display at the Pigeon Forge show in TN.
When we perform work on a vehicle of this nature we like to not only video/photo document everything but write a short project summary to go along with the vehicle’s history and documentation. For those interested, below is the summary written for this project. YouTube video coming soon.
🔹Overview of project🔹
Being such an original low mileage vehicle it was important we approached each aspect of this car with the mind of a conservator vs that of a restoration shop. It became clear to us upon inspection that the majority of this vehicle has never been touched, we would be the first individuals to remove components since the day it was built at the factory. Special care was taken to document and photograph items as we removed them for a mirror image installation. Proper preservation isn’t about leaving your mark, but rather leaving things as if you were never there.
We first tackled the brake system of the Catalina, again special care was taken to maintain as much visual originality while still creating a operational brake system. The front calipers and rear wheel cylinders were cleaned, honed and rebuilt with new seals. The original Delco brake pads/shoes were reused and care was taken to install all items in the orientation in which they were originally installed. An example of this is reinstalling the rear drums in the same position in which they came off. The brake line system was flushed and bled out with new dot3 fluid. We noted the RH front caliper was removed at one point in the car's life as the bolts showed signs of anti-seize applied.
Next, we addressed the exterior of the car. The paint and body, although in exceptional condition, was showing its age. The body had many small dings and the paint work was showing heavy scratches and overall, a faded worn out finish. Eighteen dents were carefully removed (1 on rear of trunk lid, 12 on LH ¼, 2 on top side of LH door, 1 above RH door handle, 1 in RH front fender, 1 large section to RH roof) Other dents remain on the vehicle due to concern of damaging the original paint or components. Some components had to be removed to allow proper access for dent removal, again care was taken removing and installing these items. An example of this would be the removal of the door panel water shield. It had never been removed and the factory tape was still holding it in place. The tape was carefully removed from the panel and re-adhered in the same location upon installation.
The paint was carefully buffed/polished to remove scratches/damage but not remove any factory defects and orange peel. A high-quality carnauba based wax was applied to the finish. Removing the driver’s door mirror we could compare the final finish/gloss level to the original protected finish underneath, a very good match was achieved.
While in our care many other small details were addressed. The air cleaner base had a area of missing paint about 4” across leaving bare metal exposed. Black paint was mixed and adjusted for proper gloss and blended into the lid while maintaining the original silk screen service instructions. Other details addressed were: cleaning and conditioning the wheels/tires, rubber seals, suspension items that showed light surface rust. Polishing of all glass, light polishing of all exterior chrome/stainless, and a light cleaning of the interior.
The end result is an automobile with a like new, gently used appearance. Years of wear and tear reversed, while still retaining its originality entirely. Overall, this is an exceptional vehicle with excellent provenance, documentation and originality. It was an honor and a pleasure to perform the work on this car.
