This 2017 X5 40e xDrive came in for oil change and complaint of restraint system warning message. We found a fault code stored for the passenger seat occupancy sensor. The fault memory was cleared and we were unable to reproduce the condition. This warning most likely happened either due to a low battery voltage instance, or a liquid was spilled on the seat and temporarily shorted the sensor. If it comes back, we’ll dig further(verify wiring & replace seat mat). For now, she’s good to go!

This 2005 645Ci came in for hard shifting, coolant leak, oil leak, power steering leak, check engine light, brake warning light, window inop, and suspension clunk. To make a long story short, this car will need at least triple what it’s worth in repairs and the customer has elected to sell it instead. We did perform a transmission fluid change to see if the shifting would improve, but no luck. This one’s not good to go ☹️

This 2014 650i came in with complaints of rough idle and engine hesitation on deceleration. There were no fault codes, but we did find bank 1 running very rich as evidenced by long term fuel trims and fouled spark plugs. Crankcase pressure was way out of spec. We went ahead and replaced the crankcase ventilation assembly and all bank 1 spark plugs. Bank 1 fuel trims are back in order, matching bank 2. The shudder/hesitation has also gone away. Good to go!

Another one back on the road! This 2019 330i came in for a primary concern of major coolant leak and secondary concern of check engine light on. We found the lower radiator hose and turbo coolant return line actively leaking, but in the process of that diagnosis, we found the expansion tank shutoff valve connector dangling under the intake manifold from whoever was working in there last. So two birds killed with one stone! Good to go!

A good technician is always looking for ways to improve.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about working on BMWs is electrical diagnostics. Before opening Nick’s BMWorks, I spent years troubleshooting complex avionics systems on the F-15E Strike Eagle. That experience taught me to rely on testing and data.

This week, I finished putting together a dedicated diagnostic cart for the shop. I’m excited to continue expanding our diagnostic capabilities by analyzing live sensor signals, CAN network communication, current flow, and electrical waveforms, giving us another level of insight when a scan tool or multimeter alone isn’t enough.

2023 X6 40i xDrive in for front brakes and transfer case shudder concerns. We changed the fluid and recalibrated the transfer case, but no luck. This one will need the transfer case replaced.

This 2019 X3 30i left the owner stranded when all her coolant leaked out. We got it towed in and diagnosed. We found that the heater core return hose had separated at the HMM connection. Got it replaced, coolant filled and bled, and did a good solid test drive. No further issues found. Good to go!
