I CAME HOME AFTER FIVE YEARS ABROAD — AND FOUND MY WIFE LIVING LIKE A STRANGER IN HER OWN HOME.

MY FAMILY HAD NO IDEA THE MONEY I BROUGHT BACK WAS ABOUT TO EXPOSE THEM. The first thing I heard when I opened the gate was my sister laughing.

Not an awkward laugh. A cruel one. "She actually thinks she's still part of this family."

My suitcase dug into my palm as I followed the voices toward the backyard. Five years of factory night shifts outside Toronto.

Five years of sending home every dollar I could because I believed Emily was safe with my family.

My settlement was $1 million. My mother's voice instantly softened. "Family should celebrate together."

I looked at Emily, then reached for my phone. "That's why I came prepared." I pressed play.

Their own recorded voices filled the dining room, and when the recording reached the part about Emily's treatment money, my mother's hand flew to the necklace around her throat—and she whispered—
