Rebel Dogs Garage

Rebel Dogs Garage Having started auto body as teen in the mid 70's, my passion towards the American made muscle cars has always been a driving force in my every day life, that and its really cool when you can live life through the hobby you dig.

Since 1978 I have had the passion for rebuilding “Detroit Muscle” one car at a time, and at nearly 250 plus personal cars under my belt, I will continue to build and strive for them to regain their status on the road once again.

Operating as usual

so I had to make a new patch for the 66 ElCamino, the body has suffered fifty six years of the Midwest an removing what I can to save the rest is what it’s all about right now, plus it keeps the cost and time down by making the piece rather than trying to pick one stuck on a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

another day on the 66 ElCamino
a day full of fitting new panels to areas that were rusted and wrecked over the past 50 years.
Some were willing others needed some serious persuasion.
also prepping the dash for its resurrection by welding in unwanted holes and hammering out some dents.
STILL TO COME:
• inner & outer wheel wells
• cowl to dash reveal
• custom body pieces
• rear window reveal repairs
• body mount fabrication
• lots and lots of welding
• body work

I have people always ask why it cost so much to paint a car.
Well here is nearly $650 worth of a few supplies to get any project started, this is for body work and putting panels in primer oh and there is still probably another couple hundred bucks worth of items not even in the pic like degreaser, thinners and all the tools it takes to do the job right…not to mention the metal and body work time and labor that goes into the body to get it ready for just primer.
After all that…then we can start on the paint supplies.

of course 35 years ago everything was about 70-85% less than it is now.

The sand blaster did a great job not doing the center of the hood, very happy to see that someone knows not to warp something that would not only be a pain to repair be to replace as well.

here’s a good weekend story.
as those who know me they know I love a good car story and will stand in a freezing garage for hours taking in as much the story that I can.
This is Ron’s story and this is his 1972 CUDA…and by “his” I mean back in 1972 at the young age of 20 he contacted Plymouth themselves and ordered this EV2 (orange) white interior CUDA directly from their factory.
He took off the CUDA hood and got himself a flat hood then had a buddy cut a hole in it, it was slightly larger than he wanted so to cover the hole he got a new scoop for it painted it to match the car and headed down to the local race track to test out the run time on his new toy.
While running the car a sponsor approached him and offered a deal for gas, tires and anything else the car needed as long as he ran their logo.
Yep…Orange Crush the soda…thus the CRUSHer was born!
Running 9’s and 10’s with a variety of different intakes the CUDA held its own.
Ron had signed up for the Air Force and was going away for the next three years of his life. So he parked the car at his dads house, locked up his tools and other car stuff in the trunk then wrapped it up the best he could before leaving.
Unknown to him or anyone else the tarp had come loose and the trunk slowly began filling up with water for the next few years leaving it all these years later in it current rusty state.
Once back home he got stationed to SAC in Bellevue, Ne where the car was his daily driver and also where he had his first marriage which didn’t last long as she tried to sell the CUDA, during the second marriage his wife would not allow money to go towards the car even after she rear ended a pickup truck crushing the CRUSHer, so it sat in the garage since the early 90’s.
The first pic posted is of the car pre hibernation, the second is where I met the car all those year later. With its original 63347 miles on it this is a true “garage find” to say the very least.

What is my part in all this, the trunk floor, first and foremost.
Then unboxing everything he has purchased for the CUDA since he and the second wife separated and slowly fitting it to the car to bring it back to its original state from 1972.

Taking time and doing this car right is the only way to go. From its history as a street and track beast as well as it’s a one owner single titled Plymouth CUDA with original paint, trans, engine, rear, Cragar SST’s as well all the work and repairs being directed by its original owner is going to be a very cool project.

This will be a fun one to watch!!!

as I’m working out of town each week on the 66 ElCamino project, I thought I would drag out “ol’ faithful” to take with me instead of dragging my 180 Millermatic across Nebraska until I need to for the final welds.
This is my first 110 welder I bought at Sears the same time I got my first 60 gallon upright air compressor nearly 40 years ago.
Fired it up today and still lays welds like butter.
