Broadley Automotive Ltd is in the business of building and supplying many of Broadley’s classic racing cars from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s to the worldwide Classic/Historic Racing community. Bodies and Chassis are from the original tooling, drawings and specifications. All involved share the same passion for quality and excellence of workmanship. Broadley Automotive reproduces original examples of racing cars designed and built by Eric Broadley. A team of highly skilled and select individuals, some of whom worked for Eric for many years, and also many long-time associate companies, are dedicated to bring you the only original examples of these Classic racing cars. Using the original body moulds, jigs and fixtures, acquired back in 1988, Broadley Automotive is the only company in the world that can reproduce an accurate classic example. We can also supply parts and spares, including heavy duty LG600 gearboxes, Girling brakes and any replacement parts needed. Broadley Automotive can also completely repair and rebuild damaged racing cars to their original specifications, as well as up-date your existing Classic to comply with current Classic/Historic car FIA regulations, or add features that would improve your racing enjoyment. Like all things, time and technology changes our lives. In racing, the equipment and safety regulations inevitably evolve to the good. Aligning these cars to new safety and equipment regulations requires care and consideration for the cars’ history and conformity. Broadley Automotive has evolved several aspects of these cars to keep up-to-date with these technological improvements. For example, we manufacture an uprated version of the LG600 gearbox with a stronger case and gear cluster with the latest bearings. We cast Girling brake calipers to their original exterior dimensions and appearance, then machine and assemble them with the latest piston and seal technology. This increases their durability and capability to improve safety. Other evolutionary improvements include an option facility for electronic data measurement and collection, as well as pit-to-driver communication systems. Visually, these improvements are hardly noticeable, but reflect Broadley Automotive’s commitment to continuous improvement in the product to increase the owner enjoyment, while at the same time, considering the original nature of the cars and compliance with FIA requirements.

Mission: “I want to make sure that, in the winter of Eric’s life, we deliberately celebrate his legacy in Motorsport, and for a long time to come. I would hope that no-one would deny him that honour.”

After a dismal qualifying session in torrential rain at the 2015 Silverstone Classic, Dickie Meaden and Marino Franchitti driving a Broadley T76 Donohue Mk3B, fought their way through the field to finish 2nd, only 9 seconds behind the leader at the checkered flag. Cheering them on in the pit lane was Dario Franchitti.

LIVING THE DREAM

• Marino Franchitti all set for his Silverstone Classic race debut
• Sebring winner enters FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars showdown
• Famous Daytona winning Penske Racing liveried Lola T70 revived
• “I felt like I was Steve McQueen!”

Marino Franchitti is just one of the hundreds and hundreds of racing drivers all revved up for this weekend’s sensational Silverstone Classic (24-26 July). The 37-year-old Scot, though, has a very special reason to be exceptionally excited – he’s about to fulfil a dream. “I’m going to race an incredible car and I just can’t wait,” he enthused.

The car in question is a unique recreation of the striking dark blue Roger Penske Racing Enterprises run Lola T70 Chevrolet Mk3B that famously took American aces Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons to victory in the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours sportscar showdown – it was the T70’s greatest international win.

Although the evocative Broadley Lola T76 making its debut at Silverstone is a continuation model, it is period-accurate right down to the Sunoco livery, vented front wheel arches and Perspex roof fairing over the mighty 5-litre V8 engine’s velocity stacks.

“It’s just so iconic and I’m totally enthralled,” raved Franchitti after testing the car for the first time at Silverstone last week (above). “This is a chance to experience what my heroes experienced and to be part of what’s such a fantastic event. I’ve been to the Classic a couple of times but never before with the added thrill of racing.”

With no modern driver aids, few aerodynamic extras plus more than 500 horsepower on tap, the Lola is a real driver’s delight. “It really blew me away in all ways,” said Franchitti, himself a notable racer and the winner of the 2014 Sebring 12 Hours. “It was just so alive in your hands and was so much better than whatever I thought it was going to be. Being a big kid, it made me feel like Steve McQueen!

“What’s more I loved being back in a car where you have to look after the brakes and gearbox. It was fabulous to have dials, too, and not someone in your ear telling when something is about to go wrong.”

Franchitti, whose brother Dario is a multiple Indianapolis 500 winner and cousin Paul di Resta competed in F1 until recently, will be sharing the Lola with renowned motoring journalist Richard Meaden. Together they will be contesting Saturday evening’s spectacular FIA Historic Sports Car race – a rousing encounter in which Meaden finished a fine third last summer when sharing a similar T76 (below bottom left) with fellow hot-shoe scribe Chris Harris.

“We should be pretty competitive but we won’t really know just how strong the opposition is until after qualifying on Friday,” continued Franchitti. “That said this is all about having some fun. To be racing such a wonderful car at dusk on Saturday has all the right ingredients. It’s just going to be one huge thrill.”

While the Franchitti/Meaden pairing will certainly be among the pre-race favourites, the amazing 50-car grid includes at least a dozen similar Lola T70s, not to mention some competitive Ford GT40s (below middle right) and some big beasts from the CanAm series’ early days (below top).

Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield are proven winners in the ex-Wilson Fittipaldi T70 (below middle left) and plenty of opposition will come from the similar entries of Jason Wright, Steve Tandy and Grant Tromans/Martin Stretton. Further rivalry is expected from the smaller engined Lola T210s, notably that raced by the rapid Scott Mansell, while touring car legend Steve Soper is another standout entry in his GT40.

Soper and Franchitti are just two of many established motor sport heroes competing at the Classic. Others include BTCC champions John Cleland, Tim Harvey, Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden, 1988 Le Mans winners Andy Wallace, plus past and present tin-top stars such as Mike Jordan, Andrew Kirkaldy, Adam Morgan, Anthony Reid and Patrick Watts.

All tickets for the 25th anniversary Silverstone Classic must be purchased in advance by 17:00 on Thursday. Adult admission starts from £40 and ticket prices include booking fees, parking, infield, grandstands, paddock access, live music – including Status Quo on Saturday evening – and the vast majority of the numerous attractions. Editor’s notes:

The Silverstone Classic – celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015 – is firmly established as the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival with a record 1125 race entries in 2014 watched by a record crowd of 94,000. The spectacular event – winner of the prestigious ‘Motorsport Event of the Year Award’ as judged by the International Historic Motoring Awards in 2013 – is staged at the famous Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, birthplace of the FIA Formula One World Championship and home of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. The three-day festival features the very best of historic racing covering more than eight decades of motor sport as well as live music from classic rock bands (topped by Status Quo in 2015) and a wealth of family entertainment. This includes free fun fair, retail outlets, a host of interactive activities, a two-day classic car auction and air displays, plus huge showcases of classic cars often celebrating important milestones in automotive history. In 2014 a record parade of 84 Grand Prix cars celebrated Silverstone’s 50th Grand Prix as well as special cavalcades to mark Maserati’s centenary and 50 years of the Ford Mustang. The Silverstone Classic is promoted and organised by Goose Communications. Goose manages worldwide events for companies such as AstraZeneca, Bacardi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Unilever.
