Governor Abigail Spanberger Signs Legislation to Raise Virginia’s Minimum Wage.
Governor Abigail Spanberger signed into law legislation on Thursday, April 9, 2026, that will incrementally increase Virginia’s state minimum wage to $15 per hour.
The new law codifies the current minimum wage of $12.77 per hour and raises it to $13.75 per hour on January 1, 2027. It will then increase to $15.00 per hour on January 1, 2028.
According to the Governor’s office, the measure aims to provide stronger wages for Virginia workers and connect more residents with career opportunities. Officials noted that the legislation supports economic growth while addressing the cost of living for working families.
This change affects employers across the Commonwealth and includes future adjustments tied to inflation after 2028. Governor Spanberger has described the bill as a step toward helping Virginians keep pace with rising costs.
The legislation, known as SB1 and HB1, was passed by the Virginia General Assembly earlier this year.
