Hard to say goodbye,
Words you do not want to write.

Terribly sad news to find out Marc Nordon passed away last evening with wife Sarah by his side after a short illness. Marc was in Hospice care.
Marc was owner/ founder of Marc Nordon Racing Sportscars (MNR). As you already know I was a sales agent for his products, particularly the exceptional VortX Se7en kits. Over the years we collaborated on several projects and became friends, I will miss our future collaborations on projects. Two in early stages.

His legacy as a designer, engineer, driver, and builder of countless cars is only matched by the friendships made along his path. His productivity was immense whilst still doing his best to find time for family.
Marc’s spouse Sarah was there to comfort him is his passing. He has two wonderful children Bella and Louis.

My condolences to all family members is there time of grief and sadness.

Too often, exceptionally talented people are lost before their time.
Marc was barely 40 years old.

RIP friend.

Some really great photography of MNR Customer Mick Siddall with his ZX1400 VortX having a really fun track day at Croft last weekend. In one picture you can see Paul Lawrence's Green turbo ZX1400 VortX joining in the fun. Good times.

Recent events make this post a tough one to write. My Last post about the build of the Prototype MNR EcoBoost VortX was April 10.
I did not take the time to post updates of the build as Gary and I were working diligently to get the car completed in time for testing, dyno sessions, track time and our first race. Facebook posting was not top of my list. Will try to do better with updates. All was going great with the build, better than expected.
Along the way I decided why not make the next post the competed car’s debut at PITT RACE in July? ideally with a podium finish in Super Touring 1 Class! Sadly, instead of the thrill of victory and debut of the EcoBoost VortX, we experienced the agony of defeat during a test session at Mid OH in Mid-July, our final shakedown run before PITT RACE. After exiting the keyhole on the back straight Gary reported the car drifted slightly right after shifting into 4th gear at 117 MPH then turned abruptly left into a concrete wall at a 45-degree angle. Hard, hard impact. Stopped at about 40 ft. Gary reported he had no control of the steering. Gary did not come around always a worry, hoped he was off in a gravel trap. But was much worse. When I caught up with Gary he said “have you seen the Car, I am sure it is totaled”.
Then joked his blood pressure reading was perfect, better than usual so they released him from the medical center. So good to see his sense of humor was intact. However, it was obvious he was in discomfort. Next day Gary went to hospital and found out he has 4 broken ribs (that hurts) and a back sprain. So minimal activity, and no lifting is doctor’s orders for about 6 weeks.
Needless to say, we both felt gutted, but since ribs will heal it could be so much worse.
One reason we felt so gutted is the MNR EcoBoost VortX is FAST, testing was exceeding our expectations and we strongly felt we had a competitive car that may actually get on the podium in it’s debut race.
Next day we unloaded the prototype EcoBoost VortX off the trailer and after a couple of days crying in my beer, I started the post-crash examination to determine the cause of incident and evaluate the extent of damage. During dismantle I found parts of Mid OH concrete wall for souvenir.
We positively found the issue. The good news is that it was not a design, part, or structural failure. But what makes this so disheartening is that the cause was a maintenance failure when Gary replaced a steering universal joint with another style.
He did not use thread adhesive on the retaining grub screw, and it just vibrated loose allowing loss of steering integrity. Too bad it did not happen sooner. But better than being in traffic and causing an accident. A harsh reminder racing is dangerous and how important your preparation can be for yourself and others.
I had already planned a trip to Florida after Pitt Race with intent to be back to prep for Mid OH in August. Basically, we did completely dismantle the VortX with exception of pedal box and removal of rear diff before my vacation days. Upon return will more carefully evaluate chassis. But I can say this. The MNR VortX chassis is tough. The all round tube well triangulated structure did it’s job. Now to figure out if it can be repaired.
Some pictures of the before and after. Keep you updated hopefully with timely post.

MNR Ecoboost VortX after 117 MPH impact with concrete wall at Mid OH
You can see some of the concrete wall. See previous post for copy of story. The all round tube highly triangulated chassis held up exceeding well. Gary owner and driver did suffer 4 broken ribs and back strain. But doing well now.

I do find satisfaction in the process and this is reason I show these post.
After the layout is determined and proven to fit with our arts and crafts foam mock up of the ecoboost raditator and intercooler, I needed to dust off my autocad Cad skills and draw up some working drawings for fabrication. Of course accuracy is critical and really zero room for error. I will have to eat the expense of any drafting errors. As designer/draftsman you have to produce 3 plan view shop drawings of both components and also of combined. In doing so you need to aware if what is possible and good practice on the fabricators end. I decided to use Radtec in UK to fabricate this combo. I have worked with them before. I worked with Darren Jeynes at Radtec and he was so helpful. Ractec's quality of work and especially there customer service to be second to none at a fair price. I knew the packaging was going to be tight and this combo would not be an easy one to pull off but they were able to make it all work out as intended. Hats off to Radtec. Will show the finished product with next post. Pic is mix of some of the drawings required.

I will try to get caught up on the progress of Gary’s prototype Eco boost MNR VortX.
This project is an exciting project and this powertrain combination should take the VortX into the Supercar level of performance.
But as they say the devil is in the details.
Thought I would outline the process of working out cooling requirments.
One of our first challenges is designing the radiator/ intercooler combo for the prototype Eco boost VortX.
Keeping the MNR VortX Eco boost cooling system within operating parameters of the ECM is the design challenge.
The new Eco boost MNR VortX Eco boost will require sufficient cooling and an efficient intercooler to support 300 Plus HP and around 350 Ft lb. torque for use in road racing and track day use, a much more demanding environment than typical road use. In doing intercooler calcs it is quite apparent the factory Ford intercooler is only good for a single hard acceleration pass and really only designed to keep intake air temps in check for highway cruising. The design challenge is how best to maximize the available intake area available in the VortX nose and how to best use the area available to achieve our intercooler and cooling requirements. I first determined the optimum intercooler sizing (not to hard) and then with some rough measurements and some home improvement store insulation board set about to mock up a couple ideas. Our first arts and craft mock up plan did not work out. The foam mock up you see in the pics was used to create the cad drawings for manufacturing. But that will be tomorrows post.

Yesterday was a good day. I assisted Gary with the install of the Ford ecoboost into the new Prototype MNR VortX ecoboost chassis. Yeah it Fits! Took us a few attempts but we were triumphant. Always a good feeling getting the powertrain installed. In fact we can install the engine and NC 6 Speed Transmission as a single unit into the chassis in about 10 minutes. Practice makes perfect. We had bit of a set back last week that we resolved with the help of Daryl form Pro Race. We needed to "message a tube for clearance". This change is noted at factory and will be modified in future kits. This is the prototype build.
Today Gary sent me pics of the body and Bonnet. Wow it looks good. Really thought we would need to modify the bonnet. This is the same body Gary used on his previous ST3 race car. We are recycling the body on the new car. In the background you can see Gary's current chassis with Hayabussa power. This chassis along with a National level "bussa engine with less than two hours will be available for purchase. This chassis was never bent and has ST3 Class win to it's credit. If anyone has interest get in touch with me.
