What are the best vehicles you can get under $8000? It’s not that cut and dry: Most vehicles (except a few) last a very long time these days and every car has led a different life. No doubt that Toyota, Honda, and maybe Mazda are hands down the best, but a $7000-$8000 Toyota or Honda are going to have a similar price to comparable vehicles that are 5-6 years newer. If 20 years is a rough average life of a vehicle due to the rust in our climate, then it might make more sense to spend $7000-$8000 on a 10 year old vehicle than a 15 year old Toyota/Honda. Since every car has led a different life, the key lies in assessing the vehicle you are buying on its own merit.
1. It is very easy today to look up known issues with specific vehicles and Kelley Blue book values: do the home work
2. Less whistles and bells usually mean lower price and lower repairs
3. Miles aren’t everything: if a vehicle has no body rust, minimal cosmetic blemishes, and a clean interior, usually that is a sign of how the vehicle was treated and maintained mechanically.
4. Pay for a third party mechanical inspection.
Having said all that, here are some recommendations. Avoid 2012-2019 Ford Focus and 2013-2019 Nissan Sentras and Altimas due to transmission problems. If you not dead set on Honda/Toyota/Mazda, then here are some good picks you might find around 10-12 years old and below $8000: Ford Ta**us, Chevy Malibu, Cruze and Sonic, Chrysler 200, Kia Soul, Optima, and Forte, Hyundai Sonata and Elantra.
