The excitement and gratitude to Counsel Member Chin and CB1, our proposal to upgrade the infrastructure of the park has been approved!

Now the work to install an in-ground watering system can begin. We will also be fixing the fountain so it will work properly, big garbage cans, more shrubs, plants, and ground cover.

Our mission is to protect the park as the downtown congestion rises and the use of the park increases.

We hope to bring our park to a place that it will be low maintenance, self-sustaining and increase green space.

Spring is blooming in Delury Park! Come visit soon as we anticipate the Tulip's seasonal arrival.

Save Our Seaport

A LETTER FROM GALE A. BREWER, MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT AND MARGARET S. CHIN, NYC COUNCIL MEMBER
TO NYC ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

February 13, 2018
James Patchett, President
Economic Development Corporation 110 William Street
New York, NY 10038

Dear James Patchett:

We write in furtherance of the recently adopted Resolution by Manhattan Community Board 1 dated January 23, 2018 in which the board requested that our offices reconstitute the Seaport Working Group (SWG). You are aware of the importance with which our offices view the South Street Seaport and the role we believe the Seaport Museum must play in this area. We are all also aware of the challenges this neighborhood faces, including climate change, aging infrastructure, and the after-effects of Sandy. We have also repeatedly raised concerns that we not allow developers to functionally privatize this historic district through control of land or the ability to make unilateral decisions concerning programming for the neighborhood.
In 2014, when the SWG issued its guidelines and principles, the participants identified the need to create a process for ongoing community engagement. Without such a process, we have lurched from one unexpected challenge to another, learning of situations or events in the district from various sources, reaching out to EDC to confirm the facts and doing our best to troubleshoot any problems and get information to the community at large. This occurred in the case of the Howard Hughes Corporation’s invitation to the Guggenheim to participate in programming in the district in 2015 and in demolition decisions such as occurred with the Link Building in 2016.
While we believe progress has been made in tone and transparency on some matters in the district, we believe adding some structure to our interactions can further improve the situation. Therefore, we propose the creation of a community advisory board with the express goal of creating a structured way for stakeholders to engage on a quarterly basis. This group should be charged with regular, timely collection and dissemination of information regarding construction, resiliency, programming, safety, enforcement and milestone accountability for prior community agreements, and quality-of-life concerns as they arise.

We would like to partner with EDC and Manhattan Community Board 1 to bring together the other local elected offices, representatives from other relevant city agencies such as Cultural Affairs, the South Street Seaport Museum, Howard Hughes Corporation and representation from a landmarks advocacy organization, other businesses, landowners, and community groups that are located within the Seaport Historic District. However, we also strongly feel that this group should not take the place of regular conversations and relevant presentations to the community board and its appropriate committees.
Our offices will be in touch this month to coordinate with staff to discuss potential membership representation, a proposed schedule and start date, and group bylaws.
Sincerely,
Gale A. Brewer Council Member Margaret Chin Manhattan Borough President 1st District

On Saturday, October 15th, the Friends of Delury Park put on their gloves, picked up their shovels, and planted more than 700 daffodil, tulip and bluebell bulbs throughout the park. A few new volunteers joined the group of committed gardeners who help out every It’s My Park Day. Joy Y is one of the new volunteers. She just happened to be in the park on Friday, when she saw Veronica, the president of the Friends of Delury Park, working in the garden. Joy asked how she could help, and she was thrilled to learn that the next day just happened to be It’s My Park Day. Also, working as a volunteer, was Alex Hart, the original designer of the park who remains very committed to the vitality, care, and beautification of the park.
All volunteers were happy that the weather was perfect for planting. Nadia V, a regular volunteer noted how the weather is always beautiful on It’s My Park Day. She asked Veronica, “Do you use the Farmers Almanac to plan the day?”
“No, just pure luck,” replied Veronica.
Some pure luck, and lots of hard work on the part of the volunteers, should lead to a rainbow of blossoms in the springtime.
