This one found its home on the South Carolina coast.

A couple came across our ad this 1992 Defender 110. Flew their plane into Asheville. Spent five hours with the truck — every inch of it — before they made a decision.

That’s the right way to buy a Defender.

The build is as complete as it gets. Full chassis-up restoration on a Marsland galvanized chassis. 300tdi automatic. Finished in Bonatti Grey, one of those colors that looks different in every light and right in all of them. Every detail sorted. Nothing left undone.

She’ll be driving it as her primary vehicle on the SC coast. A Bonatti Grey Defender 110 on a coastal backdrop is going to turn every head on every road she takes it down. We have absolutely no doubt about that.

Five hours of questions, test drives, and going over every inch of the build. No hesitation at the end of it.

That’s what a completed Higher Ground Rovers build feels like when someone who knows what they’re looking at finally gets behind the wheel.

Congratulations to the both of you. Take care of her, and let her take you everywhere.

There’s no roof. No filter. No barrier between you and wherever the road takes you.
A restored Defender soft top isn’t a vehicle — it’s a decision to actually feel the drive. Wind in your hair, sun on your arms, and 40 years of Land Rover engineering underneath you.
This is what we build for.

A first time Defender owner right here in Asheville brought his 90 in with the original 2.5 turbo(19J) still under the hood. He loved the truck. Wasn’t sure why it didn’t feel quite right.

The 2.5 turbo was why.

It’s the engine Defender people politely describe as “problematic.” The one that makes experienced owners shake their heads. Not because Defenders aren’t tough — they are — but because that particular engine never did justice to what the truck is capable of.

We sourced a 2.8L 300tdi and paired it with a new R380 stumpy from Ashcroft Transmissions. Straightforward swap. Great client who trusted the process, asked great questions, and never once made the job harder than it needed to be.

He picked it up, drove it around, and came back grinning.

That’s what a Defender 90 is supposed to feel like.

The best Defender is the one that actually gets driven.

Not just by you. By everyone in your house. Your partner. Your kids. The friend who borrows it for a weekend trip. The family member who’s never touched a clutch and doesn’t plan to start.

The current build on our floor — a 1998 Defender 110 finished in Buckingham Blue — is getting an automatic transmission. One decision that turns a weekend truck into an everyday truck. A driver’s machine into a family machine.

Marsland galvanized chassis. 300tdi. New bulkhead, new doors, new interior. And a transmission that means nobody in your life ever has to sit this one out.

The Defender was built to go everywhere.

Now everyone can take it there.

This week at Higher Ground Rovers, a new build begins.

A Defender 110. And before anything else happens — before paint colors get chosen, before engines get discussed, before anyone talks about interior trim — we start here.

The chassis.

What you’re looking at is a Marsland galvanized chassis, built on original Land Rover OEM factory jigs. This is the foundation every Higher Ground build starts on. Not the donor frame. Not thirty-five year old bare steel dressed up and shipped across an ocean. A new galvanized chassis that will outlast everything we’re about to bolt onto it.

This is the part many restoration shops skip — not because they want to, but because overseas import law won’t let them. We don’t have that problem. We build in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, and we start every single build the right way. Out with the old, in with the new.

Follow along. This one’s going to be something.

If you’re shopping for a restored Defender, you’re going to hear about Dry Climates.

Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Dry. Low humidity. Clean donor vehicles with minimal surface rust.

It sounds reassuring. It’s supposed to.

Here’s the thing nobody says out loud: the reason overseas restoration shops talk so much about donor history is because they can’t talk about the chassis. US customs law ties a Defender’s import classification to its original frame. Swap it overseas and the truck can’t come back. So the old chassis stays — regardless of how clean the donor looked in the desert.

Surface condition and structural integrity are two very different things.

We use a Marsland galvanized chassis on every build. Built on OEM factory jigs. Because the foundation isn’t a detail — it’s the whole argument.

Some trucks belong in the mountains. This one was reborn there.
Our latest Defender 90, finished in Portofino Red, found its backdrop in the Blue Ridge — and honestly, we couldn’t have planned it better. Red paint against autumn foliage, open sky, and the kind of terrain this truck was made for.
This is what a proper restoration looks like in the wild.

White. Clean. Timeless.

Chawton White on a Defender 110 isn’t a color choice — it’s a statement. Pure,

uncompromising, and impossible to ignore. This cosmetic restoration we helped out on strips away the years and gives back what Land Rover always intended: a truck that looks as capable as it is.

Every panel. Every gap. Every surface. Done right.

Big things are coming out of the shop this week. 🔧

We’re wrapping up the complete rebuild of our 300Tdi — fully refreshed and breathing new life with a brand new VGT turbo from Alli Sport. This engine is ready to work.

This is the heart of our next build, and we couldn’t be more fired up about where it’s headed. Stay tuned… you’re not going to want to miss this one. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Meet Tithonus — our Defender 110 restoration, finished in one of Land Rover’s most storied hues. Named for the immortal of Greek myth, this truck was built to last just as long. Every panel straightened, every bolt torqued, every surface treated with the obsession it deserves.
Some colors whisper. Arles Blue commands.
