Are you considering buying back your Total Loss vehicle? Here's what you need to know.

When a vehicle is declared a total loss, many customers are surprised to learn how the buy-back process actually works.

Sometimes an insurance company will negotiate directly with the vehicle owner about “buying back” their totaled vehicle. During that conversation, the focus is usually on the settlement amount and the salvage value of the car. What often isn’t discussed clearly is that there may still be charges owed to the repair facility where the vehicle has been stored or inspected.

At Eagle Auto Body & Paint, when a vehicle arrives at our shop we begin pre-scanning, blueprinting, and tearing down your vehicle so the damages can be properly assessed. This process takes time, labor, and shop space. Because of that, storage and related charges may apply, especially if the vehicle remains at the facility while the claim is being handled.

If you choose to buy back your vehicle from the insurance company, please remember:
• The repair facility may still have outstanding storage, teardown, administrative charges, and parts & labor still owed by the insurance company.
• Those charges are separate from the insurance settlement
• These balances must be paid before the vehicle can be released and picked up by the customer.

We always encourage customers to ask questions and make sure they understand the full picture before agreeing to a buy-back settlement. Those charges can fall on you as the customer if you are not discussing that part with the insurance company.

📢 Important Insurance Claim Information for Louisiana Drivers

We want to share a concerning situation that recently happened to one of our customers here at Eagle Auto Body and Paint.

Our customer was involved in an accident, and their vehicle was assumed to be a total loss by the insurance company. State Farm sent them a letter saying that because our customer declined to have State Farm move the vehicle to one of their designated facilities, they would not pay for storage fees, and the customer would now be responsible for those charges.

Here’s the issue:
➡️ State Farm never sent an adjuster or inspector to actually look at the vehicle in person before declaring it a total loss.
➡️ Despite this, State Farm assumed it was a total loss and tried to shift the responsibility for storage fees to the customer.

⚠️ This practice is not consistent with Louisiana law.
According to Louisiana Revised Statutes § 22:1292, insurers cannot simply refuse storage fee coverage by assuming a total loss without proper appraisal and handling of the claim process. Storage charges are part of the claim obligations tied to a covered loss. The law also governs how storage and towing charges are to be handled when an insurer accepts liability for a loss.
Additionally, under Louisiana law § 22:1297, an insurer must cause an appraisal of a damaged vehicle stored in a facility within 10 working days after being notified about its location and availability. Failure to do so can result in penalties.
❗In plain terms:
If an insurance company accepts liability and treats a vehicle as part of a covered claim (including on a total loss) they cannot arbitrarily refuse to pay storage fees just because the vehicle wasn’t moved to a facility of their choosing. They are required to inspect and handle the claim in accordance with Louisiana statutes.

We believe our customer received improper communication and want Louisiana drivers to know their rights.

What to Expect During your Collision Repair

At Eagle Auto Body and Paint, you come first.

Our role is to guide you through the repair process, advocate for safe and proper repairs, and help reduce stress during an already frustrating time.

So, you’ve been in an accident, made a claim, and are ready for repairs to begin. While most claims begin with pictures to the insurance company to assess damage, they almost always require a supplement.

What Is a Supplement?

Once repairs begin, additional damage is often discovered that was NOT visible in those 4 corner shots the insurance company requests. When this happens, we are required to submit a supplement to your insurance company.

A supplement is a request for:

Approval of additional repairs
Approval of additional parts or labor
Confirmation that the insurance company will cover newly discovered damage.

This step protects YOU from unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

Why Can Repairs Temporarily Pause

After a supplement is submitted:

We must wait for the insurance company to review and approve it.
We cannot legally or ethically continue repairs without authorization
Continuing work without approval could leave you financially responsible.

While we follow up consistently, the insurance company controls the response timeline.

Here are two real-time examples of how insurance companies can mislead their customers during a collision repair claim.

The first example involves an email I received from a customer after I worked with her on an estimate and followed up to help her start her claim. With just one lie and a bit of deception from the insurance company, the process was derailed. Unfortunately, this customer will likely end up with a sub-par repair using aftermarket or salvaged parts.

The second example is an outright falsehood.

The insurance company is fully aware that storage fees apply when a vehicle becomes a total loss. Those fees are owed to the repair facility by the insurance company not the customer. These scare tactics and manipulative practices are designed to steer customers toward repair facilities that have “deals” in place with the insurer. Once again, the result is often inferior parts and poor workmanship.

Don’t allow yourself to be manipulated or deceived by companies whose priority is paying as little as possible.

Choose a repair facility that puts your safety and well-being first. Choose Eagle Auto!

🚗 All Collision Repair Estimates Are NOT Created Equal 🚗

A lot of people think the smart move after an accident is to get a few estimates and pick the cheapest one. We understand why — repairs can be stressful and expensive. But here’s the truth:

The cheapest estimate is often the costliest in the long run.

Why? Because not all parts and repair methods are the same. A lower estimate often means the shop is using:
🔧 A/M or Aftermarket parts – cheaper, but not always the same quality or fit
🔧 Reconditioned or Salvaged parts – previously damaged or used components from total loss vehicles

Shops can mix and match these without you even realizing it. And when a shop uses cheaper or non-OEM (Manufacturer) parts just to give you a low estimate, the quality, safety, and longevity of your repair can suffer — sometimes badly.

So don’t choose based on price alone.
Don't choose based on the recommendation of the insurance company.

Ask the important questions:
• What type of parts are being used?
• Are they OEM, aftermarket, or salvaged?
• What repair procedures are being followed?
• Does the shop follow manufacturer guidelines?

Your vehicle, your safety, and your peace of mind are worth more than saving a few dollars upfront. ✔️
