**Traffic Advisory - Crash I-49 Southbound near Mile Post 140 (Natchitoches Parish)**

**Update: 4:35 p.m.- Northbound lanes are open**

**Update: 6:00 p.m.- Southbound lanes estimated to be closed for approximately 6-8 hours. Please visit www.511la.org for alternate routes.

**Update: 3:30 a.m. (Friday)-The southbound lanes on I-49 at Exit 148 (Powhattan Exit) are now open to traffic. LA DOTD has removed all related signage and detour information, and normal travel has resumed.

Louisiana State Police is currently investigating a crash on I-49 southbound near mile post 140. Southbound lanes are being diverted to Exit 138. Please avoid the area, if at all possible, and seek an alternate route.

Road closures and detours can be found using the Louisiana Traveler Information System through several different methods including the 511 phone system, www.511la.org, LA DOTD Twitter accounts, and the “Louisiana 511” smartphone application.

Coushatta Man Killed in Natchitoches Parish Crash

Natchitoches Parish – On January 1, 2026, at approximately 1:11 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a one-vehicle crash on I-49 north of Natchitoches. The crash claimed the life of 42-year-old Chad White of Coushatta.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2025 Kia, driven by White, was northbound on I-49. For reasons still under investigation, the Kia left the travel lane, impacted a private contractor arrow board, and then exited the roadway. After impact, the Kia overturned and ejected White from the vehicle.

White, who was not restrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local medical facility where he was pronounced dead. The passenger, who was restrained, sustained minor injuries. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis.

Although not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
