Return to Seasons Sailing

Return to Seasons Sailing www.returntoseasons.com Margaret dreams of traveling the world and sharing her adventures through the pauses her photographs create.

Her work, both as an academic and as a fine art photographer, has taken her across the country and overseas on numerous occasions. She has been inspired to make work about water while living aboard Bear. Jeff grew up spending summers on the water at the Jersey Shore, sailing along with surfing, washing dishes, and generally having a lot of fun. To make it through the winters he would read Joshua S

locum and John MacDonald and dream of sailing the world and living on a boat. He is still reading and dreaming, but is also an academic who specializes in nineteenth-century American environmental and cultural history.

Why, you might ask, is Jeff jumping into the chilly Maine waters? Did he lose a bet? Sadly no, nothing that comical. Two days ago, after 8 years of cruising, we had the rather traumatic experience of hitting an unmarked rock near the entrance of Holbrook Cove. We were at the tail end of a motorsail from Belfast in light winds when the bow violently bucked up amid the most terrifying sound. I (Margaret) was at the helm and quickly looked down to see if I had mistakenly steered us into the shallows. Nope. We were in water that was charted to be 20’ deep. The boat seemed to climb onto the rock until about midship when it quickly pitched to the side and violently slid off. We were both shocked but quickly got our wits together and steered over to the anchorage where Jeff donned his wetsuit and went in to survey the damage. We are thankful that Bear’s full keel seems to have only suffered some cosmetic scratches and gouges. Posting a shot where I dropped a waypoint on the plotter so others can try to avoid this hazard.

Rainy day aboard Bear today. The perfect weather for organizing the provisions, perfecting my latte-making skills, and stopping by the oldest bookstore in Maine for some new field guides and environmental history books. Slow living is good!

Cooking on our boat is always an adventure. After eight years I thought I had seen it all, and learned how to best use our propane oven (rotate often and use a thermometer!) This cookie fail today reminded me who is boss. Please share with us your favorite/most memorable cooking experiences from your boat!

When we first started cruising, in 2014, we were a one dinghy family. During our sabbatical cruise in 2018-19 we bought a used kayak from another cruiser in Georgetown, Bahamas. It has been great to have both “cars” to help us navigate in a variety of situations. We dream of a slightly bigger inflatable with a bit more horsepower, but we would need to upgrade our davits to hold a bigger boat!

Ever wonder what a cruiser’s typical day looks like when living on the hook? Yesterday we fixed a leak on our water pressure pump, shot some hoops while waiting at the bus stop, climbed Mt Eliot, and enjoyed a pastel evening rainbow from the comfort of our cockpit. Not too shabby!

Sunshine galore on MDI. Exploring what is within walking distance until the Island Explorer bus begins service tomorrow. Cruising gives us a chance to slow down and appreciate the lure of the local.

Bear is on the move again! This screenshot of PredictWind is a great example of the kind of discrepancies we must navigate in passage-making decisions. Two weather models, two very different forecasts. Jeff and crew are currently enroute from Cape May to points NE.

Elsa plan: we left Block Island at dawn this morning and sailed about 35nm west to Essex. We were able to pick up a mooring at Essex Yacht Club where we will ride out the storm. We stripped our dodger and bimini off and double-wrapped the sails. If the forecast holds, we should only see gusts in the 20s here whereas Block is expecting 45+. Stay safe out there fellow sailors!
