📣 Important update for NC homeschool families with teen drivers!

Beginning October 1, 2026, North Carolina will no longer require a Driving Eligibility Certificate (DEC) for teens to obtain a learner’s permit or driver’s license. The change was enacted by the NC General Assembly in Session Law 2026-46.

Until October 1, the current DEC requirements remain in effect. Families with a teen applying before that date should continue to follow the existing process through the Division of Non-Public Education.

Please share with other NC homeschool families who have teen drivers!

Edit: Please note that this does not change the need to take driver's ed classes and do the driving portion. Your student will still need to go through all of the steps, but will no longer have to wait for the DEC to be sent from DNPE to prove that they are a student in good standing.
