BCM Freightliner Solder Repair. A lot of cracked joints and cold solder joints. Very time consuming job to clean up everything and put new solder on all the pins and where I found cracks under the microscope

I gotta get this area organized. A lot of work comes in fast every week and I need to work on my bench work flow and install some shelves and move what I dont use as much to my basement and organize to be able to work down there as well if I need to. I have a friend im gonna hire for a day or 2 just to get stuff moved and go shopping for some shelves. I need to improve work flow and setup a test area and a rework area and final testing area. I really need parts bins for all the capacitors, transistors, resistors, diodes, and other parts as well.

Did some underglow lighting this week for a customer. I generally just fix wiring issues but never install lights. Even did the vent lights. Used 2 kits and it took every bit of 12 hours total just so no wiring hangs or fully exposed. I worked on this in 2 nights because I wanted to see how it all worked out. I temporary attached the lights with double sided tape to see how to looked before permanent mounting. Customer was very happy with the install and was with me the entire time as I worked on it. What do yall think? Did it turn out good?

Notice:

Hi customers,

If I have done any ECU cloning or tune backups in the past 2 week I wanted to let you know that I had a harddrive crash. I replaced the drive and recovered to my last restore point but I have lost about 2 weeks of data. I have no idea why my backups stopped over 2 weeks ago as it surposed to back up every night.

I recently discovered memory issues and drive failure of corrupt data last night. My computer kept crashing and rebooting constantly. Probably why the backups never completed. Guess it was happening a while but I never seen it because I was turning wrenches when it was going on.

If you need to have another backup done before tuning or making changes to your vehicle, please get in touch and ill back up the ecu again of couse no charge.

I sent text message to affected customers tonight. My system issues are resolved for the most part. I have lost some of my updated software but will get that working again this weekend and get my licensed software thats hardware based updated so I will be calling some companies to get my very expensive software working again(license doesn't work now because of hardware changes). Going to be a very busy weekend trying to get things back in order and continue working on current jobs. Could have been worse. 9 customers were affected and were notified. From now on I will get email address to send the files to customers as soon as they are made.

It shouldnt be an inconvenience as all the customers have working, running vehicles. I just wanted to notify because I normally backup ECUs I repair just in case its needed if they have a tuner brick their ecu or mess up a tune. I run into that more than people know and ECUs are not cheap so I keep a way of recovering them. I get shops send me ECUs prior to tuning to get a full backup just in case the tuning device they have fails in the middle of a write process and freezes. That happens a lot im afraid to say and the shops scramble to either eat the cost of a new ECU and get keys programmed and attempt to tune again or they send me the ECU to do a BDM/Chip hardware level backup to be able to recover them if bricked. I get a lot of calls about recovering bricked ECUs almost weekly now.

When someone opens the ECU before sending it out to you and you find pads and components missing on the board. Usually I will not take these jobs if its already opened but in this case it came from a friend's shop and they wanted me to take a look. Hopefully ill sort this one out. No com to scantool on the car but I have communications on the bench. Almost thinking its sonething else taking the CAN Bus down in the vehicle. This ECU could be damaged or just missing the one component. Ill have to check my documents for this ecu to see what was there as Ive worked on this type before and took plenty of photos. Almost need another HDD since Im running out of space for my own testing database

Had to Jtag into this Ferarri TMS320F DSP Chip and clone it a while back. This one failed but luckly the customer had another that had good data on it that I was able to clone over after replacing the DSP chip. Took a good bit of time to figure out what was going on. after bad data was getting spit out on the CAN bus and checking all the logics with a curve tracer and logic analyzer I was able to determine the flash was corrupt. I also found complete sections of memory that were gone completely with no access. I got the new IC in and flashed it with a copy of the good working units flash using Jtag on the connector on the left. No documentation on this so I had to figure out what each pin does with a test signal input and logic analyzer on each pin watching activity. Then go through roughly 850 Pages on the datasheet looking for timing, commands the input looks for and a ton of other things. But I got it figured out, my documentation saved and the flash memory saved. It was an expensive reverse engineering project because these boards dont seem to exist anymore

Merry Christmas! Thank you all who worked with me and all the customers who kept me challenging myself all year long on different projects and adventures. Ive learned a lot over the year and discovered new ways to do things and worked on electronics from kids toys to musical equipment, fireworks control boards, classified hardware that was in millions of dollars of development and even all the electronics in vehicles. You all racked my brain and gave me new challenges. Thanks for keeping me busy for 2025. We will see where 2026 takes us.

Thanks for a great 2025,
Chad
