There's a difference, and it took me way too long to figure it out. Being "nice" meant saying yes when I wanted to say no. It meant letting people walk all over me because I didn't want to make waves. It meant putting everyone else's needs ahead of my own until I had nothing left.
And you know what I got for all that niceness? Taken advantage of. People saw my kindness as weakness. They assumed I'd always be available, always say yes, always put up with whatever they dished out.
So I stopped. I stopped being "nice" and started being GOOD instead. Good means I'm kind when it's deserved. I help when I can, but I don't set myself on fire to keep someone else warm. Good means I have boundaries and I stick to them, even when people don't like it. Good means I tell the truth, even when it's uncomfortable. I stand up for myself. I don't apologize for taking up space.
And you know what happened when I made that switch? The people who were just using me disappeared. And the people who actually cared? They stuck around.
Because real relationships can handle honesty. Real friends don't want you to shrink yourself to make them comfortable. So no, I'm not nice anymore. But I'm a damn good person. And that's way more important.
