THANKSGIVING: A STORY OF SURVIVAL VEILED IN ALLEGORIES AND ILLUSTRATED BY SYMBOLS, by Bro. Constantine “Alchemist” Costopoulos, P.M.

As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with our loved ones, I'd like to share with you a reflection about this special festivity.

Thanksgiving has an uncanny similarity to our Masonic allegories and symbols, as it's veiled under many layers of meanings. Some extend from hearsay to history, and from mythology to the mastery of astronomy as a science for its practical and spiritual applications to life.

I don't intend to make this a lecture, but only a humble reflection, so I'll cut to the chase to the best of my abilities:

The "Thanksgiving Layers" thus explained:

Historical: I won't ponder deeply into this. You have Google. If you decide to research on your own, however, only trust .gov, .edu, or even .org websites of reputable institutions. Avoid social media and Wikipedia.

Traditional: focuses on practices in different places, from as far east as China, to The Middle East and the Mediterranean and Northern European countries, to North America. What we call Thanksgiving, others call by different names. What matters is their celebration around the same period, because they are all the same thing: "Fall" or "Harvest Festivals"

Symbolic: as we go around the 1st quarter of the year (Spring), we enjoy our youth, form our dreams and direct our ambitions and curiosity. Best time to learn. In the 2nd quarter (Summer), we are full of strength, life energy, and a ferocious fire. We are capable, reputable, admired, and have a world to conquer. We're king of the jungle on its best of days! It's time to work; everything for the sake of productivity, efficiency, and victory. There is no time to stop and smell the roses. In the 3rd quarter (Fall), that strength is no more, and the once ferocious fire settled to a bed of glowing embers. It's cozy, and it's getting dark. Best time to collect our goods and count our blessings in each other's company. Here, we reminiscence. We talk more in the past tense and get more excited over memories than about the coming days. It's not time to learn or to work. It's time to stop the ride for a moment, stretch our legs, and look at the road traveled. "Damn!" -you should say- what a fu***ng ride! Because... then the 4th quarter (Winter) comes, and the deal "is marked”! Alas!

Other symbols representative of Thanksgiving and other Harvest Festivals alike are seasonal fruits, pumpkins, fall leaves, nuts, etc. Among these symbols, the most important for the context of this reflection is the Cornucopia: a horn filled with a variety of the above-mentioned items, and it represents "Plenty."

Does it sound familiar?

Mythological - The symbol of the Cornucopia is especially important here. It originated in Greece's Golden Age, and according to ancient lore: Zeus (aka. Jupiter) was hidden by his Mother from being devoured by his Father, Cronos (aka. Saturn) inside a cave on the island of Crete. There was a satire (a half-goat - half-human mythological creature) charged with caring for the infant. It's said that one day while playing with the satire, baby Jupiter with his godly strength, broke off a piece of its horn. It was an accident he felt ashamed for and remembered even until after becoming the undisputed ruler of Mount Olympus. Having absolute power, Jupiter took the satire's horn and filled it with all kinds of goods of the season, from eatables to perfumes, incenses, and gold, and silver. He told the satire, "this horn represents PLENTY, and it's my gift to you, as a promise that you will always be blessed with plenty for the rest of your immortal life."

Of course, we know that myths, like allegories, are simplistic ways of explaining to the masses complex and subjective ideas, the kind requiring mastery of the liberal arts for its understanding, such as the following, and final layer:

Astronomical: In this case, the mythological God, Zeus, represents the planet Jupiter, and the satire of the broken horn represents a region in the southern night sky where we find the constellation of Capricorn. It is in this direction where we find the planet Jupiter rising on the horizon in the dusk hours shining brightly, and it can be appreciated with the naked eye.

Cool! Why does this matter?
In antiquity, the rising of Jupiter on the constellation of Capricorn hinted our ancestors on the last call for harvesting before the death grip of Winter divests the land of life and possibilities.

Also, Jupiter is so massive that it attracts and swallows otherwise earthbound asteroids originating in the asteroid belt of the outer region of our galaxy. In short, if it wasn't for Jupiter, the Earth would be hit by a mass-extinction event every 500,000 years, as opposed to every 5,000,000 years. Without Jupiter, the evolution of complex forms of life on Earth would have been impossible. That means no turkey, no Thanksgiving, no Black Friday, no nothing!

So, if you are not sure what to be thankful for this year around, go out after your turkey dinner and look out for the brightest point on the southern skies, and say THANK YOU!
